In mod erately active dealings stocks pushed higher led by steel and energy shares. In unrelated notices Oliva Dionne faced a birthday milestone with a $1,000,000 trust for his five daughters. Authorities reported a predawn fire destroyed the Strathcona Hotel in an interior town, with seven feared dead.
City Council in a special session approved a $6,500 transfer from the general fund to street repair and resurfacing. Front and Market streets were set for resurfacing with Bluemont possible, pending the manager’s financial judgment as year end approaches. A bid of 11 per ton from F F Earp Co. was accepted. other bids ranged from $13 to $13.50 per ton.
Local dealers promote a wide selection of used cars with low down payments and easy terms. Anthony Eden secured a stunning victory in the British Geneva elections leading the Conservatives to a likely landslide. Voters backed his pro United States foreign policy and rightward shift as Churchill’s long tenure ended in a fifth consecutive victory for Eden. Labor suffered a sharp repudiation of Bevins and left’s stance as Morgan Phillips conceded defeat.
Grafton State Police issued the warning to motorists for Memorial Day travel urging early starts to avoid last minute rush and risky speeds. Caution was urged for both short and long trips as heavy holiday traffic raises the need for safe driving.
DETROIT The CIO United Auto Workers rejected Ford's half million dollar contract offer. 195,000 Ford workers are to be ready for a potential major strike, the first since 1950, with talks failing on guaranteed annual wages. The contract expires at 12:01 a.m. June 1.
At noon today the temperature rose eight degrees to 43 while yesterday peaked at 15 in the Tri County area. Forecasters predict a high around 88 with scattered showers and thunderstorms tonight and tomorrow. Last night’s low was 47, with tomorrow remaining partly cloudy and carrying a chance of showers.
Washington reports a record population of 165 million at 8 51 51 am EDT. The growth continues at one new member every 12 seconds, marking an unprecedented total for the nation.
St Augustine Catholic high school seniors were honored at a colorful class night program. Valedictorian Patricia Shay and Barbara Duffy saluted, with awards in Religion English Spanish Typing History Choral Shorthand and Cheerleader honors. Tornado fatalities surpassed 100 as wider areas in Kansas Oklahoma Texas and Missouri faced devastation. Udall was wiped out with 76 dead and Oxford nearby added eleven more. statewide deaths reach 87 with injuries above 3 000. Blackwell and Cheyenne in Oklahoma reported deaths and extensive building losses. A B 36 crash killed 15 airmen near Sterling City Texas. Missouri saw one fatality near Perlis. Flooding and rain accompanied the storm as droughts broke in Arkansas Iowa and Little Rock recorded 7 25 inches in six hours.
CHICAGO A strike threat by freight conductors and brakemen was averted by a graduated pay increase. Pay rises from 20 cents to over $1.30 a day take effect June 16 and apply to members of the Order of Railway Conductors and Brakemen's Union, which covers about 81 percent of the nation's conductors and brakemen. The average daily rates are $15.17 for freight conductors and $13.17 for brakemen. Passenger train crews also gain 20 cents daily. The dispute began in 1949.
A seaman went to police headquarters seeking the citys gambling joints after two shipmates allegedly stole 970 from him aboard ship. Mayor George Roy Clouth stirred local fury by proposing supervised prostitution and gambling.
A slate fall at the Carbon Fuel Co. mine in Winifrede Thursday killed Earl Buffington 64 of Winifrede. He had over 25 years of service at the mine.

Washington officials formalized safety standards for a new vaccine and said the program will run only as fast as safety permits. Surgeon General Leonard A. Scheele confirmed it is unlikely the original mass vaccination schedule can be met this summer. Manufacturers said the move will delay full resumption by at least six weeks, yet they endorsed the standards in the interest of greater safety.
The Interstate Commerce Commission conducted rites for the steam locomotive despite coal industry protests calling the ceremony premature. The ICC says coal burners are obsolete, like the Model T, while coal interests argue 6,000 steam locomotives remain in operation and accuse the ICC of aiding diesel rivals.
