Navy Experts Seek Best Way to Raise Squalus Sub

Navy divers press on after 60 hours of grueling work to raise the ill fated submarine Squalus. Captain H R Grenlee acknowledges unknown cause of sinking and cautions against premature conclusions about the induction valve. Officials plan the actual salvage once technicians approve a method, with 26 lives lost and 33 survivors already accounted for.

Bergdoll Held in Cell After Desertion Charge

York May 26 Bergdoll the nations No 1 slacker is back in custody for evading the draft. He was arrested aboard the liner Bremen and hustled to Governor's Island to face desertion charges. He faces a possible four year and ten month term for desertion on his unexpired term and a new trial for escape with immediate disposition not yet set.

Randolph Speaker at Taylor County Dinner

Congressman Jennings Randolph of Elkins spoke at a Taylor County Young Democrats dinner urging nonpartisanship on national defense and praising New Deal advances. He reviewed Roosevelt administrations and cited bank deposit guarantees, SEC, social security, CCC, wage laws, and railroad retirement. The event drew 256 attendees and continued on page two.

Kenny Hero of Blaze at Inn Arthurdale

A sleeping guest’s cigarette started a mattress fire at Arthurdale Inn early today. Mrs. Franklin D. Roosevelt and her Washington party were unaware, as Raymond Kenny and another occupant extinguished the blaze after smelling smoke at about 2 a.m. The inn lies in central Arthurdale where Mrs. Roosevelt planned to address graduates and led a tour of Scott’s Run yesterday.

M'Kell Coal Kilsyth Mine to Close Permanently

MT HOPE May 26 Approximately 250 coal miners lose their jobs as McKell Coal and Coke closes the Siltix mine at Kilsyth. General manager W R Ballard says the mine is permanently closed and tracks are being removed. Comment on other McKell mines withheld. Kilsyth shut March 31 as wage contract expired. United Mine Workers pickets appeared after notices May 13. Mines never operated under a union contract.

June Grand Jury Called To Hear Red Man Cases

West on May 26. Pre sentments against 59 miners accused of violating the Red Man act during the coal shutdown will be heard by a June grand jury in Lewis county. The men were arrested after a Jane Lew truck driver was assaulted while loading coal. Prosecutor James H. Brewster said they would not be called to trial before the November term if indictments are returned.

High Salaried WPA Officials Pinpointed in Kanawha County

Senator Holt of West Virginia told the senate that many well to do individuals are paid high salaries as WPA officials in Kanawha county. He said they were chosen for political value through family and financial connections, not for knowledge or relief merit. No names were given.

Ex convict testifies as main witness against Judge Manton

In New York May 26 ex convict Morris Renkoff testified he arranged a 25,000 payment to Judge Martin T Manton from Archie M Andrews of the Didograph Products Corp in a patent suit. He said a 10,000 down payment went to Fallon named as Manton’s bagman and another 10,000 later, with 5,000 to follow. He also claimed 7,500 was paid to Charlie Rich to influence an appeal on a bond theft case.

Bund Leader Is Arrested for Larceny

Fritz Kuhn national leader of the German American Bund jailed near Reading Pennsylvania on forgery and grand larceny charges totaling fourteen thousand five hundred eighty nine dollars related to band activities. He traveled with Gustav Elmar Thomas Dixon and Gerhard Wilhelm Kunze to Chicago and Milwaukee to speak. He faces potential long prison terms if convicted.

World Famous Pianist Paderewski Stricken By Heart Attack

New York May 26 Ignace Jan Paderewski world famous pianist and former Polish premier is reported to have had a mild heart attack. He is under doctor care and his American tour is cancelled. A Madison Square Garden concert drawing about 110000 was halted after he fell ill. He had resumed touring earlier but felt ill again last night and was moved to his private car with his physician before hospital admission.

Social Security Office Tour In Grafton Details

The Social Security Board will conduct an office in Grafton at the Grafton Banking and Trust to assist Taylor county residents. From 10 a m to noon on June 14 a board representative will help applicants with old age and disability claims and account changes. An itinerant nonstation will visit every alternate Wednesday through the State Employment Service.

Public Is Barred at Final Committee Debate On Bill Backed By Dr. Townsend

The House Rules committee barred the public from its final discussion of the Townsend old age pension bill as it weighed whether to grant preferred status for debate next week. A large crowd attended a lively hearing while the panel questioned three Ways and Means members. Doughton opposed the bill though Hendricks favored it. Treadway noted strong demand for a House vote.

Criminal Attack Charge Made Against Elkins Man

Elkins police questioned a man and sought another after a 17 year old girl said she was attacked near a carnival. A passerby heard screams and alerted police leading to an arrest. Authorities reported an attempted attack as well.
