Flood Waters Threaten Western Texas Cities

Dallas, May 19. Swirling flood waters advance on central and northeastern Texas and southwestern Arkansas after lashing storms that killed four. Red, Trinity, Brazos, Colorado and Guadalupe rivers rise. Brazos near East Waco in flood threat. Red River near Texarkana cuts off highways and railways, force residents to higher ground. Rescue teams battle currents as levees weaken near Fulton. washouts delay trains. George Paine of Center Point drowned while attempting a river swim with three others. Three other deaths reported in southwestern Dallas County from a severe storm.

Singers to Give Concert Here Thursday

The Salvation Army Fresh Air Camp benefit concert brings the West Virginia Wesleyan College choir to the high school auditorium in Grafton. About 50 voices will perform under Professor J. Farnsworth with robes shipped from Wesleyan College. Citizens are urged to support the fundraiser as funds will aid camps for Taylor County children to enjoy two to four weeks of summer time, with local service clubs aiding ticket sales and the Commercial Club organizing sales efforts.

Salt Raiders Curbed by Stern Police Tactics

Bombay May 19 Police guarding the government salt depot at Wadala used lathis to round up Nationalist raiders attempting entry into the salt enclosure. Seven nationalist volunteers were injured as spectators grew in number and were driven back.

Veteran Local Railroader Dies Sudden Death

James G. Brown aged 60 of Pearl Street Parkersburg died at 4 30 Sunday morning. He served the Baltimore and Ohio system as an engineer for 32 years from Grafton terminal. Funeral plans are tentative with burial in Clarksburg. He began as a fireman then moved to the throttle, handling No 11 and the National Limited between Grafton and Parkersburg for about two years. He was an Odd Fellow and a member of the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and belonged to the First Baptist Church.

Parsons Boy Killed By Friend With .38 Pistol

Parsons May 10 Miles Dumire sixteen year old son of Mr and Mrs Jasper Dumire was accidentally shot and fatally wounded Sunday afternoon at 3 o'clock by Robert Minear son of Creed Minear cashier of the First National Bank The Minear boy after dinner at the Dumire home had been at a baseball game with Miles They went to a shanty where a .38 revolver with five loaded shells and one empty shell was present Minear jokingly said he would shoot Miles and pulled the trigger striking the boy in the heart causing instant death The Minear boy was overwhelmed with horror and the gun was surrendered to Sheriff Cooper The victim's father is a well known pidho tuner in Grafton and nearby cities The prosecuting attorney from Thomas and state police conducted an investigation Puneral plans are incomplete.

President Hoover to Review Battle Fleet at Cape Henry

Washington May 19 The battle fleet of the United States ready for inspection will journey to the Virginia Capes to be reviewed by President Hoover accompanied by Secretary Adams and Admiral Hughes. Hoover will depart by special train for Norfolk and board the cruiser Salt Lake City to view 65 vessels at Cape Henry and off the capes.

Paris May 15 Mrs C S Smith of Delphos Ohio the Gold Star Mother who suffered nervous strain on her trip aboard the steamship America was pronounced completely recovered Medical officers said the report showed no illness beyond a cold Sightseeing and a formal start of the battlefront cemeteries were planned for tomorrow.

Moonshine Rum Brews Draw Fire From Judge Warms Youth at Pool Halls

Judge Warren B. Kittle opens the Taylor County circuit court May term urging strict enforcement of the 18th Amendment. He warned moonshine operators will face full enforcement powers and urged the grand jury to return true bills where evidence suffices. Aimed at youth, he also banned pool halls as unsuitable for minors and ordered 50 jurors summoned for petit service with notices 18 days prior to sessions.

Auburn N Y May 17 Gat Eye Annie notorious burglar and underworld figure escapes from a women’s prison in Liberty. She had been in custody since October 28 1926 on a ten year grand larceny sentence and previously escaped from a solitary cell and the Buffalo rail yard before being captured after injuring her ankle.

Plan for New Hospital Gains Added Support

The week long drive for a new hospital by the Grafton and Taylor County Hospital Association near completion with strong city backing and 100 percent civic club support. Rotary, Kiwanis and local individuals show rising petitions aiming for a two thirds majority. county response is strong though precise figures unavailable. A county wide push is planned this week to cover remaining areas, with a full report due in Tuesday's Sentinel.

Graf Zeppelin Reaches Seville on First Leg of Voyage

The Graf Zeppelin arrived in Seville on May 19 at 4:50 pm completing the first leg from Friedrichshafen to the new world. The airship, after a 24 hour flight about 1,500 miles, lingered over the northern Africa coast, while thousands cheered from the ground. Departure tomorrow will see changes in the passenger list including Mrs Mary Pierce and Lieutenant Emilio Herrera.

Fire menace from the Sigmon No 1 gusher sprayed oil and gas high into the air. Wells were shut down and drilling suspended as shifting winds carried the stream toward other derricks. Guards halted sightseers a mile distant.
