Body of CBS Reporter George Polk Found Near Salonika

The 34 year old CBS correspondent George Polk was found on the shores of the Bay of Salonika after a week long disappearance. He had been attempting to contact Communist rebel chief Gen. Markos Vafiades and had been the subject of a wide search by American and Greek authorities.

Industrial School to Graduate Eighteen Students at Pruntytown

Eighteen boys in the eighth grade at West Virginia Industrial School for Boys in Pruntytown will graduate Friday night May 28 in the school auditorium. Dr. Carl M Frasure of West Virginia University will deliver the commencement address. He earned degrees from Ohio State and studied at Chicago George Washington, Cambridge England. He has taught at George Washington and Southern Illinois State University and served as state Merit System supervisor and director of the Office of Price Administration. Four Men Burn In Auto Wreck At Four Corners

Four men were injured in an automobile wreck at Four Corners today. Clarence Weaver a 53 year old barber from Grafton is reported in serious condition with four fractured ribs a broken collar bone and possible internal injuries. Harold Riggleman 33 of Route 3 suffered a fractured elbow and Walter Frank 46 of Route 3 a barber sustained pelvic fractures all not considered serious. Albert Avery 73 from San Diego California received a concussion a broken cheekbone and facial lacerations but is not believed seriously hurt. The accident occurred near the Blueville intersection when a Willey jeep with two California men collided with Riggleman’s 1937 Plymouth. The jeep driver Francis Avery 15 escaped injury. police estimated vehicle damage at 400.

Ten Die In Tank Blast At Koppers Plant

KEARNY NEW JERSEY May 18 A tank explosion and subsequent fire at the Koppers Company Tar and Chemical division plant killed at least 10 workers. Nine bodies were recovered from the building along the Hackensack River and a tenth died later in a hospital. Eyewitnesses and officials estimated about 11 workers were inside during shift change. The blast created a massive flame and several minor explosions. Fire and police searched wreckage for additional victims as officials refused to comment on a possible cause.

Fire Damages Queen Wilhelmina's Palace

A blaze at Noordeinde Palace in The Hague severely damaged the historic residence. Flames spread for about an hour, fanned by wind, likely started by painters burning old paint on the roof. Workman Held For Grand Jury Action Here

Workman of Curve Bridge is held for the September Taylor County Circuit Court grand jury after pleading guilty to felonious assault. He is in Taylor County jail on $500 bond awaiting posting. Workman appeared in Mag. John Snider’s court after arrest on a warrant by Guy Shackelford, who alleged a rock struck Shackelford in the head. Shackelford suffered facial lacerations. Canfield assisted in the arrest. The incident is tied to Shackelford’s Curve Bridge residence.

Ralph Hepburn dies in crash at Indianapolis speedway

Ralph Hepburn 52 of Van Nuys California, a longtime star of the 600 mile races, was fatally injured during a practice spin at Indianapolis speedway when his Novi Governor special crashed into the north turn wall. He suffered a crushed chest and fractured skull as witnesses said he was traveling over 130 miles per hour. He was married with two children.
