Charleston May 16 1934 The House voted 54 to 38 to approve the county unit school bill replacing magisterial boards with county wide boards. Conference with the Senate will settle differences before it becomes effective July 1. Opponents argued centralization harms democracy and pledged a future fight.
Washington reports a good year in 1932 citing 18 marriages and safe divorces. 1931 records show 18,173 marriages and 1,599 divorces. County figures list Marshall with 307 marriages and 24 divorces.
Principal provisions of the county unit school bill passed by the house abolish independent and magisterial district boards July 1. Five member county boards to be created with temporary boards appointed by the state superintendent to serve until elections in 1934. County superintendents to be selected by county boards. Nine month term if funds allow. Additional levies possible with voter approval. Sub districts allowed for administration. Senate version keeps contracts made by present boards for next year binding.
In Clarksburg on May 16, searchers recovered the body of Gail Merrifield 23 of Mannington, the fourth victim in a motor drowning incident last Friday when a coupe plunged over an embankment near Elk Creek. Firemen and volunteers paused dragging the West Fork yesterday, to resume today at 8 a.m. with the search extending through Point Comfort and Admon.
A city building raid turned into a home brew purge as police opened bottle after bottle, draining fifteen gallons added after raids, while Mayor King ordered a clean house. The popping noise drew casual observers and the beer was poured into the sewer or sprayed toward ceilings depending on the bottle neck.

Charleston May 16 P Gasoline taxation sharpens controversy as the house sends the county unit school bill to conference. Five groups representing motor vehicle owners and gasoline manufacturers oppose any rise, while pending legislation would levy three to six cents per gallon at the governor's discretion.
Moorefield May 16 authorities pursue theory of homicide after Mrs C L Burch 55 and her daughter Esther 17 are found dead in their Bean settlement homes. Sheriff’s office releases no immediate details as to the manner of death. Husband C L Burch, an undertaker, had been in Wardenville since Monday.
Berlin May 17 Adolf Hitler met today with President Paul von Hindenburg in a confidential session to discuss foreign policy and the critical disarmament issue ahead of tomorrow's Reichstag session. The discussions centered on the far reaching implications for Germany and the chancellor's career facing a pivotal decision.
The Bonus Army at Fort Hunt Va briefly broke camp and moved to Washington to form a mass convention near the White House. They will demand immediate cash payment of the bonus, restoration of veterans compensation, and relief for farmers and the unemployed, with transport provided by the war department.
Charleston May 16 The supreme court reaffirmed that oil and gas leases if assessed separately cannot be extinguished by sale of the land for nonpayment of taxes. The decision in the case state against Black Band Consolidated Coal Company and others relied on a prior ruling from last November.
Washington and Charleston dispatches report President Roosevelt plans multiple tax options to fund a 3.3 billion public works program, seeking $220 million via sales or other levies. Boards of education in most rural districts have employed teachers for the coming year with Flemington already staffed. Many districts hired only local teachers though some married women were employed reversing last year's policy of excluding married women. Grafton Independent District may defer hiring until after July 1 due to state legislature action and questions about county unit school bill contracts.
The circuit court continued with civil and chancery cases. Judgments were ordered for Icy Shackelford v Homer Menear et al for 1053.35 plus interest, and John H. Weaver v Green Valley Coal Co et al for 462. Bond for Mamie Hale and John Ellington set at 500 each, cases continued to next term. The week proceeds with civil and chancery matters. grand jury reports next Monday. criminal docket to begin.
San Francisco residents were awakened by two sharp earthquakes today. Shocks disrupted the electric system with street lights out in Santa Rosa and windows broken in the city. The quakes lasted several seconds each, the second stronger, rattling windows and furniture. No other damage reported.
The county commissioners and Graf ton city officials signed a contract to complete the road from the head of Yates avenue on the West Side to the Fetterman bridge where it meets US Route 50. Both sides will grade the road using city land and county tracks with a stone base from the Fetterman bridge to Yates avenue. R F C labor will perform the work.
