Third body recovered from Elk Creek tragedy near Clarksburg
In Clarksburg on May 13 the third body from Friday morning’s motor tragedy was found. Stephen Pintar 40, Mannington barber and car driver, was entangled in a submerged tree limb half a mile below the crash site. Earlier, Mrs Mary Polis 24 and Mrs Mary Oliverio Polis 23 were recovered as the six passengers in the coupe faced a swift flood. Searches resumed at dawn after the Elk Creek waters yielded the bodies and the wrecked car lay in a shallow creek bed near a cleaning plant in the Broaddus addition. The incident left four dead and one survivor.

Claim enough votes to pass school bill
Charleston May 13 House supporters of the county school unit appear to have the strength to pass the measure Monday if alignments hold from a test vote that narrowly failed to force action. Advocates of speed claimed 60 votes to 23 eight votes short of the four fifths needed for immediate final passage. Administration leaders expressed confidence the alignment would hold to push the bill substituting county school boards for magisterial and independent district boards. The senate already approved it. Three days of violent assault failed to change basic ideas before the bill was closed to amendments. Delegates remained in their seats past lunch as the house planned to send the measure into conference with senate representatives early next week. The house also passed three local measures permitting Nicho has county to borrow funds for construction and to move a net income tax bill to position for a vote Monday. The principal dispute between senate and house is the right of existing district boards to enter into contracts funding after July 1. the senate says they may, the house says they may not. An effort to remove the contract prohibition on existing boards was among many amendments rejected. Continued on Page Six.
