Grafton Incinerator Project Tied to Downtown Power Outage

A truck hit a power pole at St. John and Main causing a 2300 volt line to fail for 34 minutes yesterday afternoon in Graf ton. The outage cut electricity to downtown businesses and homes while repairs were made by line crew led by Grinnan. The at fault driver remains unidentified and may owe costs but faces no prosecution. Sentinel delivery was briefly delayed as electricity returned.

Ten Bands Set For May 30 Memorial Day Parade

Nine bands plus the Second Army band will join the Memorial Day parade on May 30. Participants include Roosevelt Wilson of Clarksburg Salem High School Shinns ton High School the Highlanders of Elkins Grafton High School Grafton Junior High Flemington High Newburg High and the Salvation Army plus about 90 West Virginia Industrial School youths in Boy Scouts 4 H and a marching unit led by Jacke R Nuzum chairman.

Engine Jumps Tracks In B and C Yards

A step by step investigation is under way in the Baltimore and Ohio railroad yards to determine why a single engine derailed yesterday at about 4 42 p m. Traffic was detoured all afternoon while the engine was re-railed. No injuries reported. The mishap will be studied by the B and C police department.

200 Expected For Rebekah Confab Today

About 200 women from across West Virginia gather in Grafton for the first district convention of the Rebekah Lodge. The event runs from 10 a m to 5 p m with state lodge officials and newly installed president Esther McKee expected to attend. Lunch comes from Andrews Methodist Church served by its Women’s Society of Christian Service under Mrs. Paul P. Warden.

Grafton City Hospital invites the public to National Hospital Day open house on May 12 with tours of the building and exhibits of equipment. Hospital board members and staff will greet visitors, with Women's Auxiliary volunteers serving refreshments. Hours are 2 to 4 pm and 7 to 9 pm.

Rev Root to keynote at West Virginia Lutheran convention

The Reverend E F K Root pastor of St Pauls Lutheran and chairman of foreign missions for the West Virginia Synod will attend the thirty eighth annual convention at Jacksons Mill starting May 14. An ordination sermon Monday evening will be delivered by a Grafton minister. Delegates from thirty one congregations in West Virginia and western Maryland join four day sessions with Synod officers including Secretary Reverend Kenneth W Munster Treasurer H L Whamer and others.

City Council awards contract to Goder Incinerator of Chicago for 20000 dollars for a 48 ton 34 foot steel stack incinerator. City Manager Curtis D. Acheson Travels to Europe for Western Coalition Talks

Secretary of State Dean Acheson departs Washington for Paris and London to strengthen Western unity against Russia. He will meet French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman and British Foreign Minister Ernest Bevin, then join a 12 nation North Atlantic Council session to coordinate defense and diplomacy through 1954.

The Grafton chapter of the Future Farmers of America will host Morgantown FFA Field Day at the high school athletic field on Saturday May 13 starting at 9 00 pm. Seven Killed In Storms Across Nine States

A vast midwest storm killed seven people and injured many as tornadic winds swept nine states. Damage runs into millions with gusts reaching up to one hundred miles per hour. Snow hail rain and dust accompanied the storm as it moved northeast, with the most intense impact fading in northern Minnesota.

35 Simpson Children Immunized At Clinic

A Pre-School Immunization Clinic at Simpson grade school administered smallpox, diphtheria, tennis, and whooping cough vaccines to 35 children. Nurse Misa Francis Tivy of the Taylor County Health Unit oversaw the event with help from Mrs. Stanley Davis and Mrs. Max Phillips of the Simpson Farm Women’s club. A follow-up clinic is planned for June.

Foley Convicted of Second Degree Murder in McDowell County

McDowell County Superior court jurors found James Clifford Foley of Panther guilty of second degree murder after about an hour of deliberation. The death of 29‑year‑old George Roberts, also of Panther, occurred at Foley’s home last March 18. Sentencing delayed until May 9 to hear motions. conviction carries one to ten years in prison.
