In Brussels on May 5 Prime Minister Paul Henri Spaak announced the coalition government would resign after a dispute over subsidies for schools. The eight Socialist, nine Catholic, and two non‑party ministers faced backing battles as the prince regent prepared to form a new government.
Buhl Shahan a former purchasing director and Democratic senate candidate accuses the state purchasing department of bypassing specifications to benefit a Charleston dealer in road equipment worth about a million dollars. He cites a list labeled with OS P initials and claims no denial has followed. Patteson seeks the Democratic gubernatorial nomination with Meadows support.

The segment highlights the city’s claim to Mother’s Day origin with a story about the Grafton woman in whose honor it was established. A separate nationwide program from Mutual will air Sunday from Andrews Methodist church at 1 p m with a simultaneous transcription at 9 45 a m.

Two alert co eds spotted a Woman in white shoes on the Washington college campus and she is being questioned today in a series of dormitory thefts at girls schools in Maryland Virginia and Pennsylvania. The suspect, Lillian Lucile Becker, 33, of Topanga California, was arrested at Centreville Maryland after a co ed chased her on a bike and turned her license numbers over to police. Loot included jewelry valued at 1379 plus clothing and cash. Dean Amanda Bradley notes the campus warning and raids across Frederick Baltimore Fredericksburg Chambersburg Gett ysburg, with authorities linking the suspect to the cases. The article also reports Howard Ferguson's resignation as Parson chief of police and Kirk Kee named to replace him.
Auditor Mirth H. Kuhl from the State Tax Commissioner's office in Charleston completed an audit of City of Grafton records for July 1, 1945 to June 30, 1947. The City Council planned a meeting soon to review the audit findings, as explained by City Manager Curtis Decker.
Local physicians moved toward a formal staff at City Hospital by organizing a temporary medical staff last night. Dr. T. W. Heironimus Jr was elected temporary chief of staff and formed a bylaws committee with Dr. Paul Warden Dr. Charles Haislip and Dr. Herbert Shanes.
In Wheaton Illinois on May 5 state’s attorney Lee Daniels said he would question Frances Korbelik 16 daughter of CIO union official William Korbelik 42 who was slain after four months missing. She admitted giving false statements and was held without charge as investigators pursue the case.
Huntington, May 5. The 12th annual West Virginia high school band festival opens with 56 bands expected over three days. The first two groups arrive tonight as more than 4,000 musicians from across the state gather for the event.
White House says President Truman remains hopeful for a settlement to avert a railroad strike as mediation talks collapse in Chicago. Presidential aides note no tangible progress and anticipate possible government seizure as a last resort, with a strike set for next Tuesday.
The Grafton council authorized preparation of ordinances for a sewer service charge and universal garbage collection. First readings are set for May 12 at 8 pm. The sewer fee would be about 40 percent of quarterly water bills and added to water accounts. A separate waste fee not exceeding 7 cents monthly would apply by residence and business, with administration via the water office. The aim is to ensure universal garbage pickup and curb unsightly disposal.
Dennis W. Kester of this city was fined 25 plus costs after pleading guilty to operating a motor vehicle while intoxicated. His license was suspended and the car impounded for six months following arrest on U S Route 50 by State Trooper W D Sergent. The 1938 Ford sedan was involved and Ona C. Jefferys reported the case.
John L. Lewis asked a federal court to toss out Ezra Van Horn’s petition seeking an injunction to block $100 a month pension payments to retired miners under a compromise plan. Lewis and Styles Bridges are trustees. Van Horn alleges unclean hands and lacks a plan. The pact ends a recent soft coal strike. initial fund of $5 million planned from welfare fund.
Dr J B Rupert pledges continued service in Grafton after May 4 1948. He will be in offices at the Grafton Bank and Trust Building, inviting his many friends to visit.
In Sarona Palestine on May 5 James M. Long reports a new Hebrew state preparing to declare independence in ten days from a former German templar town serving as provisional capital. The government will operate from buildings once housing Adolf Hitler's portraits. David Ben-Gurion chairs the provisional government and will send the proclamation to the United Nations at Lake Success seeking recognition. The state claims an army of about 60,000 and is described as one of the world’s smallest.
United Nations truce commission met in Jericho with Arab officials to press a comprehensive Arab Jewish truce for all Jerusalem. Delegates included Hussein Siraj, Tanquiddin Al Solh, and Ahmed Hilmi Pasha as negotiations continued amid intermittent shooting. A Jewish Arab cease fire extension and open city talks were noted as Red Cross officials prepared to declare Jerusalem open.
The court dismissed the case of Margaret Sue Moran versus Elias Saffle et al after a brief chancery session. Several chancery matters were resolved during the short court convening.
In Ohio's GOP presidential primary results Taft looks set to win about 15 of 23 delegates with Stassen pegged at eight. Taft led in 11 delegates from near-complete returns and aims for the lone at large post, boosting his total toward a Philadelphia convention majority. Stassen trailed with six of his nominees winning four more, leaving him short of the predicted majority.
Kingwood May 5 A Preston County Court ruled deputy J H Benson may stay on the Republican sheriff ballot. Raymond Hartman had argued Benson was ineligible since Benson served under current Sheriff Spindler, but Judge Watkins said constitutional ban does not apply to primary elections. Hartman, a Republican candidate, would win nomination but could not appear on the November ballot unless Spindler resigns or someone else who has not served in office runs.
Senator Magnuson said President Truman will tour the Pacific Northwest after a June 12 speech at the University of California Berkeley. The trip includes Spokane Seattle and Olympia with a first stop at Guego Lane according to the Washington senator after a conference with Truman.
