A flurry of late spring weather brings scorching heat and thunderstorms across the East as records are challenged. Reports from Washington Charleston and Las Vegas note health, fire risk, and civil defense timing as agencies monitor conditions.
Taylor County records its second 1955 traffic death when a 1951 Sylvanus Cheno weth Smith of Galloway collided with a Wolfe Coal Co truck two miles south of Flemington West Virginia Route 77. Smith died instantly. Howard R. Moss and his wife escaped injury. The car was totaled. coroner Ona C. Jefferys and officers investigated. Burial set at Mt. Vernon Cemetery with services Friday. Survivors include widow Louise Boyer Smith and four sons.

City crews began trash collection on West Side and Fletchertown as the wide clean-up campaign starts. Crews will work east of Market Street to Blueville intersection tomorrow and west of Market and Southside on Friday. Officials including Mrs. Tom Bartlett Jr. push for year-round efforts to keep the city litter-free and inviting for Memorial Day visitors and the summer tourist season. County Sanitarian J W McDermott notes clean streets curb germs and pests and attract new factories by showing a healthy, well-kept city.
Weather brief notes showers yesterday did little to dampen Tri-County ground and predicts clearing. Temperatures reached 81 yesterday, dropped to 42 overnight, and today’s forecast calls for 78 to 84 in the east and 85 to 90 in the west. Noon reading 77 with a low in the 50s tonight and partly cloudy, warm conditions tomorrow.
Bernard Sulski planned a quick hospital trip but got tangled in a cloverleaf maze on an expressway. As his wife went into labor, the couple welcomed a baby boy in the car just as they halted in front of the hospital.
Only $79 would remain in the Patricia Knight fund if the hospital bill were paid to date. Contributions total $2,294.97 against a hospitalization cost of $2,215, with the balance expected to be used today for the 14-year-old burn victim’s 11th trip to surgery.

The Public Service Commission was asked today to raise hourly charges by Wheeling truckers and those within a 25 mile radius. Proposals include Saturday overtime from 4.40 to 6.75 dollars and for a can and driver from 8 to 10.75 dollars.
In Grand Rapids Michigan a police court judge fined Philip Lopez $50 after he testified his act of slashing a car door with a knife and deflating its tires was caused by a mistaken belief the vehicle was his. He said he thought the car was his own.
Cobell Huntington Hospital trustees chair Max I. Jones announced preliminary approval of 213 500 federal grant from the U S Public Health Service to outfit the hospital’s multi million dollar expansion project.
Washington reports the United States has a hands off stance on India's bid to broker talks between East and West on Formosa. Jawaharlal Nehru announced plans to send V K Krishna Menon to Peiping to seek direct U S Red China negotiations for a peaceful Formosa solution. Chou Enlai allegedly invited Menon, while Nehru urges US and Nationalists to step back from Formosa.
A Commerce Department official said today that aggressive ventures in foreign trade could make the next 12 months one of the best periods in U S history. The remark signals optimism for renewed trade activity and policy momentum.

Charleston WV Valley Bus Lines of Fairmont asked the Public Service Commission for authority to start four daily bus runs on a 2.3 mile route from the outskirts of Fairmont to the intersection of Route 260 and secondary State Route 62. Owner John Hf. McDonald said the line would replace service once provided by the defunct West Virginia Transportation Co.
The Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Co. announced its board approved expenditures totaling 100250 for new construction and facilities. Of this, 643100 was allocated for installing new dial equipment in Moundsville, with additional spending for Weston central office gear and rural service extension to Piney Run and Bunker’s Ridge areas east of Fairmont.
INVERNESS Scotland Billy Graham wrapped up his All Scotland Crusade in the Highlands then left for a week of rest and golf. He cited that about 52 000 declared for Christ in person or by leased wires, as the campaign neared four million who heard him preach.
A thief broke into Sherman Elementary School storeroom in Cincinnati and stole 15 plastic water pistols checked out for pupils. Police investigated the burglary and items were to be accounted for by the school authorities.
Senator Joseph C. O Mahoney urges amending the administration foreign trade bill to require congressional approval before trade agreements take effect. He says the bill would let the President cut tariffs by five percent for three years.
President Eisenhower urged testing the flexible farm price support system before Congress votes on restoring the old rigid program. Democrats insist flexis will hurt farmers, while the President cites prior income declines under the old system. Other actions include highway funding debates, extending the Hoover Commission, prison-appropriation shifts, and floor votes on the farm bill.
In Cleveland on May 4 defense attorneys for convicted wife killer Dr Samuel H Shea rd argued nine new pieces of evidence support a bid for a new trial. The state dismissed the materials as opinion and conjecture. Judge Blythin took the case under advisement awaiting a decision later in the week.
President Col Marcos Perez Jimenez warned that Venezuela would be forced to reexamine trade relations with the United States if Congress passes legislation restricting oil imports. He spoke Tuesday during the 1955-56 budget message to the Senate.
