Former King Wally reunited in Harlan mine murder case

Jasper Clouse testified before the La Follette civil liberties committee he saw his brother Lloyd Clouse shot to death by two mine guards of the Harlan Wallins Coal company near Verda in Harlan county. He described the attack on April 24 and said he was beaten and left in the street as shots rang out during a confrontation with Bill Lewis Melvin Moore and other company deputies. His 12 year old half brother Markham Clouse also testified witnessing an ambush of a carload of union organizers. The manager Pearl Bassham allegedly warned family members not to testify.

United Fuel Gas asks board to base 1937 tax on 1936 income

Charleston, May 4 United Fuel Gas company a major Southern West Virginia producer asked the Board of Public Works to not base its 1937 tax assessment on 1936 income The utility lists 4678391 dollars as net income for last year and argues unusual circumstances produced that yield and that 1937 returns would be well below that figure The company also estimates labor costs will rise about 12 percent and supplies and materials 10 to 20 percent more than 1936 levels

Samuel B. Bailey, long connected with Taylor county schools and this year’s Miller ville teacher, resigns to become assistant county agricultural agent in Jackson county. Miners to Hold Rally Saturday in Galloway

Members of the United Mine Workers in Taylor and Barbour counties will rally Saturday night at Galloway to learn about the social security act. The meeting begins at 7 p.m. A. A. Knapp, field representative of the board in Charleston, will speak. This Galloway meeting is part of a series of five.

Farmer Named Fast Survives Driverless Tractor Chase

In Lamar Missouri on May 4 a 55 year old farmer, Lynn Fast, fainted and fell from his tractor. The machine rolled on driverless until the man jumped back and overtook it. He recovered from the incident with the runaway tractor.

Tax Commissioner Ernest K James announced the appointment of the former assistant prosecuting attorney of Mingo county who for four years has been head of the inheritance tax division. Stolen or Borrowed 3000-Pound Street Scraper Missing

SAN DIEGO California May 4 A 3000 pound street scraper vanished from the former exposition midway site last seen April 10. City officials say the heavy machine has been misplaced borrowed or stolen per the street superintendent’s report to police.

Basques Seek To Evacuate as Bilbao Battles On

Basque defenders fought a last-ditch stand to save Bilbao and permit evacuation of women and children. Insurgent reports said Emilio Mola’s troops pushed into the mountainous north of Bilbao while shells commanded the Nervian and Bay of Biscay approaches. Government forces held west of Bermeo as Basque officials claimed heavy Italian losses. The Basque government fled with the president’s family as foreigners were moved aside.

Mayor Fred Wilson of Fairmont will be principal speaker at tonight's Grafton Kiwanis Club session at Debendorfer's Cozy Rest Inn on U S Route 50 near Pruntytown. Striking Dairymen In Ashland End Milk Layoff

Ashland Kentucky May 4 striking dairymen ended a three day layoff and resumed milk deliveries under a one year agreement. Officials said the deal includes union recognition a 45 day price hold and a $25 minimum wage. Five dairy companies were affected. Official inspection marks Berkeley Run cutoff work

A 12.2 mile leisure run over the Berkeley Run cutoff between Grafton and Philippi in New Martinsville marked the U S inspection of the relocation work on the Grafton and Belington branch. The party included Baltimore and Ohio officials and U S Army engineers with Lieut Col Covell leading the engineers in this morning run.

One Body Located After Dragging Elk River

Charleston dispatch reports firemen dragged the Elk River to recover the body of Elmer Cox a 30 year old beer truck driver missing since last night. Police found Benny Hope a 32 year old man reported missing wandering along a street after a WPA worker said he saw three men throw something heavy from the Elk River Bridge.

State Senator Johnson Faces Grand Jury Action

Mason county grand jury reconvened to hear a presentment from Prosecutor William H. Rairden charging State Senator Howard B. Johnson with obtaining money under false pretenses related to a 1750 real estate deal where Marjorie Biffe alleges he acted as her agent. A federal grand jury indicted Johnson for misappropriating about 3000 from Pt. Pleasant National Bank, and he posted 500 bail for a Wednesday hearing over allegedly failing to turn over books and data of the Progress Building and Loan association.

Evansville May 4 Lightning struck Culver school triggering the fire alarm. Teachers evacuated pupils into a drenching downpour then found no fire. A bolt of lightning caused the alarm system to ring and the students were sent home to dry out.

In Clarksburg the closest race saw Republican Paul W. McKinney contest Democrat E L Simpson in the seventh ward council contest from April 20.
