Michigan farm area report says a 26 year old brunette, well dressed, was found shot five times on a rural road at 7 PM by farm hand Philo Forshee. The body showed no struggle. Kingsley, the employer, reported hearing a disturbance.
Charleston May 4 A Rev Clarence W Kemper urged a united drive by churches against a new god known as nationalism in opening the 53rd West Virginia state convention of church schools He warned delegates from Sunday Schools across the state of the danger of replacing the life of God in the soul of man with the religion of the state Fourteen denominations attend to discuss religion and life.
A fire at Robert Packer Hospital in Sayre Pennsylvania forced 225 patients to be evacuated as flames swept through the木 building. An infant was born during the blaze and both mother and child were saved unharmed. An elderly man died of shock after being rescued with a broken leg. Fire companies from Sayre Waverly Elmira and Athens battled the blaze as water ran low. Ambulances ferried patients to Waverly and to homes and churches in Sayre. The origin remains undetermined with the lighting system out of order and explosions noted from chemicals. Over two million dollars in losses feared.
In Charleston on May 4 the state senate approved Governor Kump’s tax bill by 24 to 4. It lowers the retail sales tax from two to one percent and trims wholesalers and other levies while retaining a one percent personal income levy above six hundred dollars. The house will consider its own graduated scheme, with conference expected to resolve divergent rates.
An automobile carrying substitute workers in a strike at Lowell Shoe factories was fired upon near a filling station in Lexingtonsboro Massachusetts on May 4. George A. Forrences, 22, of Hudson New Hampshire was wounded in the face head and eye by shotgun blasts.
The Warder will case, long pending in circuit court, was heard by Judge Herbert W. Dent. Parties, through counsel, reached a settlement: Edna Turner will transfer bonds and pay court costs to Robert Warder and Rebecca Warder or their attorney W. P. Samples. The matter centers on a 1926 will reportedly destroyed by fire after Warder’s 1931 death.

London May 4 Prime Minister Ramsay MacDonald told the House of Commons Britain favors the American tariff truce proposal for the world economic conference period with safeguards for Britain’s tariff position. He spoke after reports on Washington discussions with President Roosevelt noting war debts have been examined but no fuller statement is possible while agreement remains unresolved.
Flemington May 4 A 24 year old Lebanon chauffeur Harold Wolfe is jailed on a murder charge in the slaying of Mrs Georgiana Heights 40 of High Bridge The prosecutor says Wolfe confessed and witnesses say the ride ended after the driver made improper advances prompting a struggle and the shooting of Mrs Heights
Boston Mayor James M. Curley urged the House judiciary committee and the United States Conference of Mayors executive committee to back Fletcher’s bill opening federal banking courts to insolvent municipalities. He said they oppose the McLeod moratorium bill.
Pittsburgh May 4. The Better Business Bureau today declared a national drive against racketeering in all forms. Manager Ruel L. Elton said millions are taken annually in Pittsburgh through fake charity and benefit schemes and confidence games. He urged cooperation and stated the aim to wipe the slate clean.
Washington reports the Roosevelt administration pressing Italy and Argentina to join a program of lower tariffs and exchange stabilization. President Roosevelt and officials met Italian Finance Minister Guido Jung to discuss world economics and the June London conference. Argentina floated ideas on wheat control and meat quarantine relaxed import limits to reduce abnormal stocks.
Indianapolis May 4 Lou A Johnson national commander of the American Legion condemned a frenzied economy drive cutting veterans benefits. He urged the Legion executive committee to adopt a four point policy on national legislation affecting veterans. He said President Roosevelt's appointees have exceeded promised limits.
Washington reports say Robert F. Lamont warned the 30 hour work week could close steel plants and cause unemployment. In Harwichport Massachusetts a report of a negro seen with a white girl in a car near Mashpee prompted 20 state troopers to search the area for 10 year old Margaret McMath abducted Tuesday. State Public Safety Commissioner Daniel Needham ordered the troop deployment and may have left on an unannounced mission after issuing the order.
Le Mars Iowa May 4 military commission says progress in prosecuting the mob that dragged a judge from his bench and maltreated him. Valuable evidence obtained. Major Mallonee reports rye witnesses to the attack on Judge Charles C Bradley identify crowd members involved in the assault during mortgage foreclosure dispute.
Oil City Pennsylvania reports in April 746 wells completed east of the Rocky Mountains with initial production of 206 162 barrels. This includes 240 dry wells and 49 that produced gas. End of April 2 290 wells were in process, down from 2 326 in March.
New York May 4 Tidewater Associated Oil president Axcell J Bylas told stockholders at the annual meeting that the forthcoming first quarter report will show a substantial operating loss. The statement came as Tidewater Oil disclosed plans to issue the report soon and outlined ongoing hardship in the refining and distribution segments.
Charleston reports a senate vote rejecting independent school district exemptions from county unit plan while the city and county agree to jointly build Riverside Drive from Yates Avenue to Route 50, with county and city trucks and a steam shovel to be used in widening and grading the road.
Des Moines Iowa May 4 Action on the May 13 farm strike declaration was postponed today by the National Farm Holiday convention. The decision awaits possible farm relief bill action in Congress. The convention approved a telegram from Senator B B Smith chairman of the senate agriculture committee noting the strike depends on whether the cost of production is included in the relief bill.

In Wheeling on May 3 authorities sought Edward L. Fox a 56 year old former Elm Grove businessman missing since last month. Officials think amnesia explains his loss of memory and that he may be heading toward Nevada where he previously lost fortune in a gold venture. In Pittsburgh another amnesia case saw a man enter police headquarters seeking help to identify himself saying he recalls nothing before Sunday after being found en route to Pittsburgh with a stranger who picked him up in Cumberland Maryland.
Washington May 4 The huge inflation bill faces reconference after Senate and House committees open talks. The inflation annex l, accepted by the House, was not in dispute, but over 80 farm related amendments remain unsettled. Dr T W Heironimus Jr opens an office in The First National Building for Medicine and Surgery.
