Durand dead after bold Powell bank robbery bid
Powell Wyoming report details Earl Durand, the mountaineer outcast known as the renegade of the Rockies, ending a nine day escape with a fatal shootout and attempted bank robbery. A 17 year old boy, Tipton Cox, fired the shot that killed Durand, then Durand killed himself with his six shooter. Durand had killed four pursuers and visited three ranches near Powell before returning to town to target the bank. An earlier letter to Sheriff Blackburn challenged them to mount his head and display it in the courthouse.
