An aftershock hit at 5:18 am on the third day after the Friday quake, waking thousands across Southern California. Long Beach reported the heaviest tremor with sections of a department store coping falling into the street. one new death was noted, bringing the 119th victim to Henry Ufen of Los Angeles as officials kept watch for further damage.
The senate tabled Senator McCarran's motion to refer the Roosevelt economy program to the judiciary committee. The defeat ended the push to send the bill to committee and boosts advocates confidence that Roosevelt's authority request on veterans and federal payroll costs will win approval in days as the house already favored the measure. McNary indicated Republicans did not bind on the bill, but a substantial majority may support the President.
President Roosevelt sent a surprise message to Congress urging immediate passage of legislation to modify the Volstead Act to legalize beer and other beverages within constitutional limits. He pressed for substantial beer taxes to fund government needs, estimating annual revenue around 125 million dollars and stressing budget balancing importance.

The Home Building and Loan Association, closed during a bank holiday proclaimed by President Roosevelt, received a telegram from R L Charter Jr state banking commissioner authorizing reopening. Officers welcomed the news, with offices in the former Grafton Banking and Trust Company room.

He also filed nominations for Paris with Jesse Isidor Strauss of New York and Mexico City with Josephus Daniels of North Carolina. Japanese reports to day said 500 Chinese were killed in a battle at Hsifengkow a pass in the great wall of China yesterday. Japanese casualties were listed as 13 killed and 31 wounded. Chinchow Manchuria March.
Herbert W. Dent was sworn in as judge of the nineteenth judicial circuit this morning in the circuit clerk’s office due to the court room renovation. Governor Kump signed his election certificate after Watkins’ mandamus proceeding dismissal. The contest revealed missing ballots from 15 Barbour county precincts during the process.
