The Tygart Lake Development corporation will open its facilities including the boating dock at Gratton lake on April 1. D A Howes park engineer and R B Harris of the State Conserve Commission advised on boating regulation differences. Directors plan a May 7 meeting at 7 30 pm to plan the opening and hire a facility manager.
Secretary Forrestal and Joint Chiefs of Staff outline steps to strengthen U S defense posture amid global tensions. Officials emphasize no plan for preventive war and stress unity in building military strength to deter aggression. Meetings focus on weapons, manpower, and defense funding debates.
After ten days of fund drive by Taylor County Chapter of the American Red Cross total contributions reach 1240.25 with 380.25 added today and 860 carried from earlier. The drive aims for 4000 as volunteers face rain hindering residential canvass. Grafton Woman's Club and Business Girls Club lead neighborhood canvassing while Leonard's Grocery Pittsburgh and West Virginia gas office and J C Penney display windows highlight the drive. After a five hour search by parents and 38 Grafton volunteers, little Thomas Wade Fletcher, three and a half, was found at a neighbor’s home. His mother noticed him missing about 4 p.m. and a neighborhood search followed until a neighbor woman reported he was safe at her house at 10 p.m.
A new cold wave is forecast to push temperatures to around 10 degrees above zero by tomorrow morning and reach Taylor county tonight. Snow and much colder air are expected this afternoon with a freezing midday. Last night dropped to 28 with 7 am at 30, ending several weeks of mild weather as Easter nears.
Coroner H Tiny Knapp announced that James Conrad Miller 30 of Blue Sulphur was killed and placed on a railroad track to seem accidental. The jury concluded death resulted from foul play by a person or persons unknown.
Wheeling officials report WWVA managing director William F. Ryan announced a FCC TV license application. WWVA seeks channel 12 with 32.49 kW visual and 17.1 kW aural power, similar to its 50,000 watt radio authorization, with estimated setup at 256,500 dollars and annual operating costs about 120,000 dollars. WWVA-FM is also operated. In Athens, Dr Harry L Ice of Bethany College nominated governor of Rotary International’s 185th district, covering all West Virginia except the eastern panhandle, a nomination tantamount to election.
Charleston March 11 Despite a recent supreme court ruling programs of religious education in many West Virginia counties will continue until authorities get orders to stop them State School Superintendent W W Trent said the supreme court opinion will not materially affect West Virginia programs and he did not believe the rate had deviated from the principles proclaimed in this opinion School officers in Monongalia Cabell and Marion counties have announced they would continue to conduct classes until reconveiled contrary orders Monongalia's program is non sectarian and Cabell's is described as more a course ethics than religion
Jan Masaryk, 61, dies under mysterious circumstances and is to be honored with a state funeral by Czechoslovakia's Communist government. He will be buried beside his father, Thomas Masaryk, founder and first president. The funeral will be held at the Prague National Museum Pantheon with Premier Gottwald and Deputy Foreign Secretary Clementis speaking.
The Senate privileges and elections committee amended the governor’s anti Truman bill to allow the president’s name on the November ballot in Virginia without petition. Chairman Robert C. Vaden said the favorable vote was unanimous and the bill, already passed by the House, proceeds to the Senate floor with two amendments added.
Washington March 11 Senator George D Ga forecast the Senate Finance Committee will back an income tax cut of about 4.75 billion with some Democrats joining. Chairman Millikin says the panel can finish writing the bill by nightfall as Republicans seek a hitched figure between 4.5 and 5.0 billion to win Democratic votes and veto override chances. George says the amount will be roughly midway between Millikin’s low and high estimates.
A Chicago fire at a mental hospital kills nine patients, with survivors reporting frantic scenes and rescue efforts as responders battle the blaze through the night. The cause remains under investigation and the facility is evaluating safety measures.
Nine women patients perish in a mid night blaze at Highland Hospital for Nervous Diseases in Asheville North Carolina. Two others died after being carried from the four story central building by firefighters as the inferno spread from the kitchen to an elevator shaft and the roof. Police and hospital staff searched grounds for any other victims while doctors nurses and police aided frightened patients.
Honolulu reports a soldier Pvt Samuel A Wong 24 shot his wife Rose Lim Wong 20 then died in a stolen plane dive into the sea. Five children witnessed the incident one girl nine slapped him. Wong died near the Matsonia as passengers watched. The bride survived with four bullets in her head. The case closed per Detective Eugene Kennedy.
London March 11 The government said an agreement with American film producers ends the tax dispute that caused a Hollywood ban on exports to Britain. Harold Wilson, president of the Board of Trade, announced the 75 percent duty on earnings from imported films would be withdrawn as soon as an order is issued.
Maj. Gen. Bennett E. Meyers rested his case without calling witnesses in a defense case over allegedly inducing a business associate to lie to a senate committee. Lawyers prepared for an outright acquittal, arguing the inquiry was illegal. Only evidence offered was senate resolutions creating the war investigating committee. Meyers' wife Ila Ray appeared in court for the first time.
Richard Deck a 14 year old Fairmont resident died at City hospital after a collision on the Grafton Phillips pike Pleasant Creek hill Barbour county. Police describe the vehicle as a blue coupe and say witnesses aided in transporting him to the hospital where he died from a head concussion and multiple injuries.
Rep. Canfield of New Jersey reported a threat to blow out the brains of a congressional investigator named Robertson. Robertson recently finished a study of the internal revenue bureau for a House Appropriations Subcommittee chaired by Canfield. The source notes the threat was unclaimed and details are not disclosed.
A federal grand jury charged Henry N. Garsson and Murray W. Garsson and associates with filing false financial statements tied to government contracts. The indictment names Erie Basin Metal Products, president Allen B. Gelinsin, and others, accusing falsified records and a conspiracy to defraud in renegotiation matters. Prosecutor Patton said the government seeks to prove at least a million dollars shortfall on 78 million in contracts.
A Mother's Day service at Andrews Methodist church will be broadcast Sunday morning May 9 over Mutual network stations in West Virginia. The program originates from Station WVVW in Fairmont and will be carried by the Fairmont station as part of the Mutual chain. J Pat Beacom and Frank Watkins attended the meeting and pledged support for the shrine project and the broadcast.
A Navy transport plane with 19 aboard crash landed and burned on a foggy auxiliary airport near Donaldsonville Louisiana. Two persons were injured from shock. crew of five and 14 passengers were on board. The pilot was Lt J L Scoggin with Lt John Rue and Ensign Joe Labauch among others.
