West Virginia University will award the Pierce scholarships of 200 dollars to both the varsity and freshman football squads for the second year running. The university also announced a five thousand dollar grant from the National Institute of Health to teach cancer facts to medical students.
The Ohio Valley and central West Virginia faced major floods after days of rain. Freezing temperatures halted runoff, but forced hundreds from homes in Logan and along the Ohio River near Parkersburg and Pt. Pleasant. Kanawha River maycrest at Mood level thirty four feet. Williamson area still isolated by floods, rail and road crews clearing landslides.
The fourth and largest test in the 1985 Nevada series lit the sky and stunned observers 800 miles away. About 600 soldiers on the ground and aircrews watched as a 500 foot tower detonation produced an estimated 40,000 tons of TNT yield, with a dust plume covering Queen Flat an hour after the blast. The AEC said the test was successful with no casualties.
A Senate Subcommittee on Labor and Public Welfare opened hearings on unemployment factors in the coal, railroad, and pottery sectors. The Mary Martha Circle of St John s Methodist church contributed to the Patricia Knight fund raising it to 671 05 on deposit today. Committee members hold 35 for deposit. A 1 year old burn victim who had her first skin graft last week will return this week for a second procedure continuing through March. Her condition is reported fine. Hospitalization costs today total 904 with 687 paid.
West Main Street Methodist pastor the Rev Marvin Freed spoke on The Steadfast Pace. He described Christ turning his face toward Jerusalem and highlighted Jesus as a source of joy and compassion for the poor in spirit and the merciful. The sermon emphasized how Christ’s face reflected steadfast purpose and joy.
President Eisenhower, marking the Remagen Bridge anniversary, awarded 11 living WWII veterans certificates of membership in the Society of Remagen Bridge. He called the crossing a symbol of ingenuity and readiness, presenting Drabik the first certificate.
Charleston reads a Finance Committee report recommending a bill to extend the state capitation tax to women. The measure also cuts the tax collector's commission on collections from 10 to 5 percent.
ATLANTA (UP) An Army captain complained that the men who captured Germany's Remagen Bridge in World War II were left off the invitation list for a Washington celebration by President Eisenhower. Capt William McMaster of Philadelphia, now post operations officer at Fort McPherson, says as a lieutenant he commanded Company C of the 27th Armored Infantry Battalion in the 9th Armored Division and his unit took the bridge. He wonders why he and others in his company were not invited.
WHITH SULPHUR SPRINGS W VA UP searchers found 17 year old Sandra McDaniel missing since Saturday lodged under a bridge across Snake Creek about a half mile from her home at Snake Run Va just across the West Virginia border. Nearly 200 searchers combed the rugged mountains area in the vicinity of the girl home in a renewal of the hunt which began Saturday when her parents Ernest M Daniel reported she had opened a gate in the back yard and wandered out.
Miami-Dade up river downs race track in Ohio was sold for about one and a half million dollars, disclosed Sunday by co owner Frank Moore. The sale marks a major change for the Ohio venue and its operations moving forward.
