Natchez Towboat Sinks with Fourteen Missing on Mississippi
Greenville Mississippi March 5 Fourteen to twenty crewmen were dead or missing after the 180 foot towboat Natchez rolled over and sank in a treacherous Mississippi River current beneath a bridge piling. Captain William A Howell of the Sohio Latonia reported eleven survivors and said the Natchez carried a normal crew of 28 with 26 to 32 on this trip. The disaster, described as the worst in his 12 years on the river, left Natchez master Captain John Browinski missing and pilot Walter Haas of St. Louis among the rescued.

State Senator Harlan Staats of Ripley filed for the Republican nomination for state auditor. Bigamy charge nets Grafton husband in Taylor jail
James R. Brunson, a 30 year old strip miner, is jailed in Taylor county on bigamy charges. Authorities say he married Lenora McFarland last May or June in West Virginia after divorcing wife Dena Brunson in Illinois. He is also married to Vivian Brunson of Decatur Illinois and to Lenora’s charge follows a prior Illinois marriage. He reportedly fathered two children and lived between Flemington and Grafton with Lenora before their separation last fall.

The Taylor County Chapter of the American Red Cross reports 1947 as a busy year led by the Home Service Program. Financial aid through grants and loans totaling 2670.51 supported servicemen veterans and dependents with hospital care fees rent and more. Loans repaid 129.39 and communications 197.00. A total of 377 cases were filed including 162 for servicemen and dependents 155 for veterans and dependents 60 civilian cases and 65 miscellaneous cases. President asks windup of WAR by June 30

Explosion at Denholm Packing kills one in Pittsburgh
In the Denholm Packing Co plant in East Liberty a blast from an ammonia tank killed James Bell, about 45, and left five workers injured. About 100 employees were in the building, with 20 women among them. Ammonia fumes forced firemen to use gas masks as ambulances rushed victims to Pittsburgh Hospital. Three injured, Albert Evans, 37, John Walch, 54, and Robert J. Kerr, 53, remained in critical condition.
