Charleston reports a wild session as 725 bills pile up before a looming finish. Amid routine measures the focus centers on bank protection and nepotism laws. Boettcher kidnapping case ends with a ransom paid near Denver.
Washington on March 2 congressional leaders pressed for action before the March 4 deadline. Emergency bankruptcy reform for railroads and farmers, the Smith cotton measure, a Hull-Walcott mortgage moratorium bill, and municipal bond moratoriums moved rapidly toward final passage. Mayor Frank Mur, etc.
Grace and Grit Sunday School Class of U B Church sponsors a bake sale in Empire Market on Saturday beginning at 10 A M Proceeds support church activities and missions. Local residents are invited to attend and purchase assorted baked goods.
In Miami on March 2 Mayor Anton J. Cermak of Chicago suffered an attack of hiccoughs. Doctors said the ailment was not serious and likely to pass. The hiccoughs were linked to peritoneal irritation from blood leakage from the bullet wound in Cermak’s liver. Mrs. Joe H. Gill’s condition remained critical after being wounded by one of Zangara’s bullets.
Japanese forces break through Chinese defences as Lingyuan falls claims and counterclaims swirl. Major General Kawahara’s unit sweeps Lingyuan and advances toward Jehol City with occupation of Ssutaoling and progress toward Pingchuan. Reports from Chinchow note airdrome bombings and rapid Japanese advance.
Washington reports Roosevelt likely to call a special session late in March, though Speaker Garner had no definite information. Garner recalled Roosevelt suggesting mid April, while noting rumors that mid March was considered to act quickly on the banking situation.
Berlin march 2 Hermann Goering charged the Reichstag fire was meant to trigger a communist revolution. He said government measures harshened treason penalties and martial law, accusing Communists of forging orders to SS to seize Berlin after the election next Sunday night. He warned against civil war while assuring lawful Communists and Socialists remain unthreatened.

John J. Devine, Johnstown private detective who worked undercover on the Lindbergh case, testified in his abduction trial that the mystery could have been solved in two weeks if not for an unseen flaw. He and six others face trial on charges of abducting Garrett Schenck, a New Jersey fish peddler, who was held in a mountain shack for nearly three months before his release last September.
Fire swept four buildings at the dye works in Wheeling causing damage yet undetermined. In Elkins West Virginia, George F. Pierce of the Coast Artillery Corps, promoted to first lieutenant, is connected to the blaze and his home. The incident date is listed as March second.
Senator Thomas J. Walsh of Montana died of a heart attack aboard an Atlantic Coast Line train near Wilson while returning to Washington with his bride. A former prosecutor in the Teapot Dome case, Walsh was 74 and named attorney general in Roosevelt's forthcoming cabinet.
Campaign managers for Representative Rainey of Illinois said Representative Byrnes of Tennessee would throw his support to Rainey for speakership and would run for the leadership of the Democrats in the new House.
Ten passengers on a New York to Washington bus were injured in a head on collision with a truck near Plainsboro New Jersey Mar 7. The crash occurred mid morning and rescue units rushed to the scene with several taken to area hospitals. Police indicated no fatalities.
The Associated Press reports Kentucky, Tennessee and Alabama adopted bank moratoriums to protect depositors. Tennessee and Kentucky declared nonmandatory banking holidays of six and four days, while Alabama ordered a ten day banking suspension. Other states permit banks to limit withdrawals to about five percent of deposits, and Maryland extends a moratorium pending stabilization measures. Michigan keeps a banking holiday in force.

Speaker Garner said advisors to President elect Roosevelt completed a ram devised plan to reduce government costs next year by as much as 200 million dollars. Treasury figures show eight months into the fiscal year the government carried debt of 1.36 billion dollars.
A bill to recreate the state water commission passed favorably from the Charleston house judiciary committee. The court previously ruled the creation act unconstitutional for granting judicial power to an executive body. The new plan provides for court review of the commission’s orders. Switzerland imported over 1.5 million barrels of petroleum products in 1931.
