Balloon scare over Berlin backed by old debris?
Reported balloon blockage near Berlin prompted U S Air Force to warn pilots to fly above 5000 feet while officials questioned the obstacle claim. Soviet papers argued Western air freight was a plunder route rather than aid, as Berlin faced potential food shortages. Marshal Sokolovsky urged adherence to flight rules and hinted at reopening western Berlin train links. Col Frank L Howley noted Americans would judge Russian moves by actions, not words.
