Alaska coal claims canceled by Interior secretary
Washington June 27 The Cunningham Guggenheim coal claims in Alaska valued from 100 million to 1 billion dollars were ordered canceled by Commissioner Dennett with Interior Secretary Fisher approval. The decision frustrates the Morgan Guggenheim syndicate effort to grab Alaska coal deposits. Public domain restoration and reentry will follow. Pinchot supporters hail the ruling as a conservation victory. Attorneys plan to appeal to courts and seek Supreme Court review. Secretary Fisher pledged to push remaining Alaskan coal claims and urge new central Alaska laws. The decision marks final department action on Cunningham claims with further determinations to follow. John W Davidson of Pittagein Coal Co rode the goat in Grafton Lodge incident.
