Return of Pons-Winnecke Comet Amid Eclipse Viewers
New York observers note the Pons-Winnecke comet will return to its nearest point to Earth tonight after a six year voyage while a solar eclipse will be visible only in the old world on Wednesday in northern Europe and Asia. A patch of light traveling about 1,000,000 miles daily marks the comet’s distant path over 1,500,000 miles from Earth as it nears. Astronomers at the Washington naval observatory saw no unusual activity, only a faint meteor leaving the comet as it moves east and slightly south of Altair, with a speed near 18 1/2 miles per second.
