Minnie Mangum, former Sunday School teacher in Norfolk, Va, was sentenced to 20 years for embezzling almost 3 million to aid friends and relatives. Across the nation, Capitol and local notices report defense funding debates, court actions, and local incidents from New York to West Virginia.
Three near drownings occurred near Tygart Dam Lake when a boat capsized about 1000 feet from shore. Wenston Bales kept his wife Ramona and Lee O Connor afloat for about 25 minutes until State Trooper Parks and Conservation Officer Progso Tocado rescued them. Mrs Bales was treated and released. she was about to become a mother. Two other incidents over the weekend involved a wrecked car at a chicken house and a separate collision on Route 50 near Flemington with no injuries.
West Virginia will be cooled tonight as a cold front moves in from the north bringing thunderstorm activity across the state. Temperatures today reached around 90 degrees in parts, with lows expected between 60 and 65 tonight and a drop of five to eight degrees Tuesday before a warmer Wednesday with more rain forecast.
The Rev. Avery Dulles son of Secretary of State John Foster Dulles celebrated his first Solemn Mass Sunday at Georgetown University Chapel. Secretary and Mrs Dulles a Protestant couple attended along with top government and diplomatic officials. Father Dulles converted to Catholicism in 1940 while a Harvard law student.

MIAMI hosts the 89th Lions Clubs convention with 5060 members gathering from across the nation and world. A three month old cub named Cee-Zre, presented by Portland Oregon and the Portland Lions Club, will lead the parade as official reader of the convention procession.
Nasser won the presidency with unopposed status as Egypt became a republic. Final returns show he secured about 90.9 percent of Saturday’s votes from more than 0.8 million voters. 2,857 voted no. A high 99.8 percent approved the constitution, with 10,046 voting against it.
Richard C. Perstiger, 46, of California Top Fayette County, died in a Beckley hospital Sunday from injuries after a railroad coal car struck him four days earlier at the mine near Land isburg.
NEW YORK Clifford F Hood president of the U S Sher Corporation denied that the industry used mystical figures in presenting its five year no strike contract to the United Steelworkers. Hood defended the cost figures as wage and benefit driven. John A Stephens chief negotiator for U S Steel attacked the union and said the package totals a fraction of McDonald’s nickel a day.
The weather summary notes 1.25 inches of rainfall over yesterday and last night per U.S. Engineers at Tygart Dam. Grafton highs and lows ranged to BAL and 62 with 0.34 inches of rainfall, while the 24 hour tally reached 86 to 61. Laan temperature reached 79 today per Turville station.
Washington records show American families reached new income highs last year. The Commerce Department reports 82 million families had an average pre tax income of 9520 dollars, up 186 dollars or three percent from 1954, and 1780 dollars above 1953.
United Press reports West Virginia temperatures will average near normal with a cooler Tuesday, cooler Wednesday, and warmer Saturday. Showers are expected Wednesday and again Saturday with total precipitation around a half inch.
The Rev Murril C. Gainer, 62, newly assigned pastor of Vincent Memorial Methodist Church at Nutter Fort, died of a heart attack Sunday during a Sunday school class with his wife. He had recently been assigned by the annual conference at Buckhannon and previously served at Spencer, Pennsboro, Heaters, Pelle, Cowen and Hamlin. He is survived by his widow and two children.
Western Pennsylvania faced severe weekend storms from Lake Erie to Pittsburgh. The Pittsburgh and New Castle regions suffered heavy rains and 70 mph winds. Bridges washed out and detours used. Butler reported around four inches of rain and widespread flood damage across low lying areas. Three deaths were reported and widespread power outages occurred as floods and winds disrupted travel across the region.
Irving A. Bonn, attorney for Joseph E. Bonn, 45, contends his client cannot stand trial due to an "uncontrollable laughter" disorder. The unusual defense seeks to delay federal court proceedings while medical experts weigh the claim.
General Nathan F. Twining met Marshal Georg K. Zhukov in Moscow to deliver a personal message from President Eisenhower. He then visited a secret Russian fighter base near Moscow to review new planes unveiled on Soviet Air Force Day. The visit included talks with Zhukov and a five hour reception, with Twining reaffirming American disarmament goals and readiness.
President Eisenhower cancels his planned July talks with Indian Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru to focus on convalescence after surgery at Walter Reed Hospital. Nehru, in London, suggested rescheduling. Eisenhower plans a Panama trip later in July and notes the date will be set after his recovery at Gettysburg.
A coalition of Progressive and Social Democrats swept toward a parliamentary majority in Iceland, aiming to close the Keflavik air base. Prime Minister Olaf Thors’s Independence Party lost seats as voters backed the anti-American bloc with two-thirds of votes counted, while Shah visit to the Soviet Union is noted.
