Seamen and evacuees arriving in Seattle describe the June 3 Japanese air attack on Dutch Harbor at 5 45 am. Civilians and ship crews aided by gunners on ships and ashore fought back with anti aircraft fire while Army and Navy personnel evacuated and a commendation was issued for bravery under fire. Official counts of downed planes remain unannounced.
Charleston June 25 A state defense office opinion says counties cannot enforce blackout regulations under existing laws though cities may enact air raid precaution ordinances. Assistant Attorney General Bibby noted any legal status would require a legislative act, following a query from McDowell County Defense Council.

Senator Truman and a Senate appropriations subcommittee launched a detailed review of the vast 42.28 billion Army appropriation. He said he will cut items not clearly justified, stressing the need to avoid building a backlog of unneeded expenditures while supporting the Army’s needs. Senator Taft echoed concerns over unnecessary spending.
MOUNDSVILLE June 25 The annual state prison minstrels a longtime Thanksgiving feature for 36 years may be postponed for the duration of the war. Director L Budd Haberstick is in the armed services while his father Pete Haberstick founder of the revues is in the service. Officials say rationing and travel difficulties would affect attendance.
Dr. W. W. Armentrout, a Morgantown WV regional OPA administrator, has been selected for a new post as Morgantown rent czar. Williams announced he is in Cleveland for training in his duties.
Washington June 25 Supporters of the Civilian Conservation Corps rallied in the senate to restore the agency s 80 818 000 appropriation after a house vote to discontinue the CCC after July 1 faced senate opposition. Senator Hill of Alabama said War department requests continuation for at least another year to aid Army posts and camps. Senator Taft of Ohio urged discontinuance.
The Federal Communications Commission dismissed Parkersburg Sentinel Parkersburg W Va application for a new radio station due to a policy denying permits involving strategic materials. The WHIS Bluefield W Va changes in existing facilities were dismissed for the same reason.
London reports the hanged for the slay of Mrs Evelyn Oatley as part of a series of blackout murders terrorizing London's West End last winter. Frederick Cummins, 28, RAF cadet nicknamed the Duke, was convicted in 35 minutes by a jury and condemned by Justice Cyril Asquith.
The House Ways and Means Committee tentatively recommends a tax package slated to raise about 5.92 million dollars from corporations and individuals, plus steep increases on cigarettes and other luxuries. The plan aims to cover part of wartime spending but would still require substantial borrowing in the new fiscal year.
Clarksburg June 25 Harrison county jury after over three hours found Kester Alkire 33 guilty of first degree murder in the March 30 fatal shooting of his wife Clarice Marshall Alkire at Enterprise. Jury recommends life imprisonment. judge to rule on motion to set aside verdict. Alkire also indicted for the slaying of his father in law Charles Marshall at the trailer home shared by the Alkire family.
Charleston reports the attorney general’s office found no statutory ban on a county board of education member voting for his son as county superintendent of schools. An opinion by Prosecuting Attorney D. E. Cuppett Jr and Assistant AG James A. Bibby Jr says the board member would not have a pecuniary interest, and a court ruling allows a superintendent to include his own name on the teachers list.

Huntington reports a new plant by Utility Fabrics of Boston and New York will manufacture industrial bags using a bonded asphalt cotton process. B Lawrence Jr will manage the plant, created to address burlap shortages. the method forgoes weaving and repurposes waste cotton as a bonded fabric.
Charleston report details J. French Williams aged 48, agent for Kentucky Life and Accident Insurance, who was critically burned while attempting to rescue his 15-year-old son from a burning suburban home. The boy Joseph was saved by his brother Ted, 19, who caught him from a second story window.
Charleston June 25 Thousands of coal miners in three states await the operators final action on the United Mine Workers demand for repayment of fines assessed last November 1. About 80 000 to 100 000 men face a 10 day vacation or stay on the job as a conflict plan drags on. Directors of the Southern Operators association met to decide the action. Page 5 MINERS WAIT.
Washington June 25. Draft orders set four categories to determine who is drafted first with dependency driving married men with children to the rear. War manpower chief McNutt then shifted prior orders to let skilled workers obtain vital war industry jobs before military service.
London reported that the Czech village of Lesaty in Bohemia was razed by the Nazis for allegedly hiding parachutists tied to Reinhard Heydrich’s slaying. Heydrich died June 4. reprisals included executions of hostages.
President Roosevelt and Prime Minister Churchill join the Pacific War council and congressional leaders in strategy talks as weeklong secret war conferences continue. MacKenzie King attends, with Vice President Wallace and top House leaders expected to participate in a broad review of the war, including Britain’s role and U S aircraft needs for a second front.
Heavy fighting raged over 60 miles inside Egypt as Axis forces swept past Sidi Barrani after forcing Salam and Sidi Omar to abandon frontier positions. British rear guard actions claimed heavy losses for the invaders while a main stand near Matruh was anticipated.
Major General Dwight D. Eisenhower arrives in London and assumes command of American forces in the European theater. The War Department notes the theater includes front line areas and communications zones, with air power blurring front rear distinctions. Eisenhower moves from the War Department to headquarter in London.
Wheeling June 25. The Ohio valley war production power supply could be cut by a strike set for midnight next Monday if union leaders and Windsor Power Company do not reach a settlement. C. E. Priest, president of local 159 CIO Utility Workers Organizing committee, said 95 percent of Beechbottom plant’s 125 to 150 workers are CIO members.
Moscow dispatch reports Nazi field commanders using heavy reserves and mass attacks to break Red Army lines on the Sevastopol and Kharkov fronts. The Soviet Information Bureau said German thrusts near Donets basin and Kharkov inflicted great losses, while stank-supported infantry advances were repelled.
Production Chief Donald M Nelson told Congress that material shortages may force scrap of metal fences gates and statues and other decorative works. He warned the government must take positive action on key materials to prevent growing supply problems.
