Italian investigator Frank de Marto was killed last night near Death Corner in Chicago's Italian district. Police lack a suspect, stating the crime is the twenty first murder in two years in the area. Witnesses in a nearby saloon report hearing no shots.
AP reports a severe wind storm striking Water Town South Carolina resembling a tornado, destroying blocks and injuring twenty two. Wires down across Wisconsin Minnesota Iowa South Dakota and Michigan. In Minneapolis four killed and many injured. Watertown Diamond City area wrecked. boats overturned in Lake Harriet. multiple missing and property losses exceed one million dollars.
Edwin Bowen and Fred Engle, youths from Martins Ferry, Ohio, were killed when their wagon delivering milk to market was struck by a fast express at a Pennsylvanian allroad crossing. A separate Kansas City game saw Howard McLarry homer twice as Louisville beat Kansas City. A six hour Manchester fire destroyed two blocks, causing $400,000 in losses and injuring nine firefighters.
A. P. Greggs of Butler county killed a blacksnake over eight feet long after it fell from a tree into his automobile near Greenville Pennsylvania during a family trip to Conneaut Lake. The incident occurred after a strenuous battle lasting several minutes with the reptile in the car.
In Fairmont West Virginia on June 24 the Democrats of the First Congressional district nominated H. M. Neely of the city for Congress. Neely was chosen by acclamation as the party’s nominee to succeed himself. The convention began at 1 20 p m with H S Lively presiding and John J Connitt of Ohio County named as temporary chairman.
An article dated June 24 from Scherin Germany reports another aviation fatality in the German army. Lieutenant Kolbe was killed when his aeroplane overturned. Captain Ruff, the passenger, suffered a broken leg.
In Germnay ten fishermen were found dead on Lake Constance with twenty or more believed drowned after a sudden Tuesday storm. Rescue boats saved several, but many craft capsized, leaving crews unable to reach land.
From Duxetown Selly Islands June 24 the rescue of passengers on the Belgian steamer Gothland was achieved by brave crew and life saving teams. A life boat with women and children broke away and sank, a quartermaster saved three women, others handed children to boats, and all survivors were landed despite heavy seas. Meanwhile at Washington President Wilson commuted several dynamite conspiracy sentences. Niagara Falls reports mediation on Mexico peace plank steps, aiming for a protocol and a provisional president choice.
Paris France June 24 striking letter carriers seized the Paris Central Postoffice and held a barricaded garrison inside as 800 police surrounded the building The strike followed the Senate rejection of budget increases for postal allowances The government promised to investigate grievances and the workers returned to work after the pledge
The Park Pavilion Committee appointed by Mayor Graham met last night with the mayor to review funding. They will proceed with building the main structure using funds on hand and add a large porch later as more money becomes available. Estimates for the main building will be shared at a joint Civic club and pavilion committee meeting next Saturday.
West Virginia announces thousands of bronze state medals for honorably discharged Civil War soldiers. Medals, bearing the recipient's name, were produced in 1866 but many were never delivered. Veterans or descendants may request delivery by writing the state archivist. An undelivered list previously existed but is largely exhausted. Governor Hatfield backs distribution at state expense. Also, on July 1, the Panama Pacific Exposition Commission will solicit bids for cinematograph pictures of the state's industries and sites for San Francisco 1916.
A colored prisoner hanged at Wapr isburg Pennsylvania refused a new suit for his execution and sang Casey Jones during the night and day near Steelton, witnessed by a twelve man colored jury and officials.

L. B. Mathews dies in his jail cell after a 15 day hunger strike. He was serving a ten year sentence for cruel mistreatment of a young man in Renton county. The incident follows his vow to satisfy a presumed wish of a woman, a claim challenged by the report.

Philadelphia June 34 The Panhandle System Pittsburg Cincinnati Chicago and St Louis Railroad Company a subsidiary of the Pennsylvania Railroad reduced the preferred stock dividend to 1-2 of 1 percent for the quarter and kept the usual 3 percent semi annual dividend on common stock. A prior rate cut from 5 to 3 percent on common and from 5 to 4 percent on preferred had already been made three months earlier. The action followed a sharp decline in the company’s share prices.
In Butte Montana June 24 a mob of insurgent miners wrecked the miners union hall with dynamite and shots. Patrols kept the city calm as work continued in nearby mines. President Charles H Moyers of the Western Federation of Miners is missing after leading a conciliatory meeting. One spectator was killed and three injured in the early evening shooting.
In Springfield Massachusetts on July 24 a superior court verdict awarded Edward Collins ten years old $14,000 in his suit against Holyoke Street Railway Company. The boy lost his right leg in a collision a year ago as the company admitted liability. Attorney William Hayes noted the boy’s lost baseball prospects and compared him to Edwin Collins of the Philadelphia Athletics.
An escort of twenty aeroplanes flew in mourning flags for nine Austrian officers killed in last Saturday's air catastrophe. The funeral drew archdukes, the Austrian cabinet, and foreign military attaches as aviators circled over the cemetery during services. Separately, Lestie Gaskins and Lewis Kitemiller Jr. with Arnold Hefner plan a Buckhannon River camping and fishing trip for a week or ten days.
Charleston West Virginia June 24 indictments against John P White president and Frank J Hays vice president of the United Mine Workers of America and 17 other national and district officers were announced in the U S District Court at the request of District Attorney W G Barnhart. The 1918 charges accused conspiracy with coal operators in Western Pennsylvania Ohio Indiana and Illinois to raise coal costs to West Virginia making it hard to compete. The case notes possible unionization aims but suggests conspiracy under the Sherman Act could not be proven.
