Cyrus H. Martin, 54, president of New River State College, died in Montgomery. A lifelong educator and later businessman in coal enterprises, he began as principal of the West Virginia Trades School in 1920, helped expand it into New River State, and served as superintendent at multiple district schools before taking charge in Montgomery. Born April 5, 1879 at Kingwood, he studied at Fairmont State Normal, Virginia University, and Davis & Elkins. He taught and led schools in Preston, Tunnelton, Grafton, Masontown, Thomas, and Mount Hope before moving to Montgomery. The Montgomery school evolved from a prep branch of West Virginia University to the West Virginia Trades School, then to New River State.
