He noted the company handles about 67 million local calls, 13 million intrastate toll calls, and about 5 million interstate calls annually as the commission weighed a third round of permanent postwar rate increases after denying an interim raise last week.

Father and twins die in Follansbee fire attic tragedy
In Follansbee near Hooverson Heights a man Herman Long 38 and his three year old twin daughters Elda Mae and Estella Marie Long were burned to death when an attic fire started from defective wiring. Anna Long escaped with minor facial burns as chief Rees said the attic housed the children's sleeping quarters and Long died trying to reach a window with a twin girl in his arms. Neighbors alerted firemen who extinguished the blaze in about thirty minutes.
