President Truman accepts an invitation to visit Brazil, with Brazilian Ambassador Carlos Martins announcing the approval after a White House conference. Martins said the trip is hoped to take place as soon as possible and that Dutra extended the formal invitation.
President Truman weighs a rent control extension through February 15 next year. The measure allows a 15 percent rent increase with landlord tenant lease agreements past December 31, 1948, and removes most construction curbs except for recreation type buildings like theaters and bowling alleys. Pinecliffe Colorado June 20 a nationwide dragnet is on for Fred W Landy 65 a former Denver teacher linked to the slayings of Emily Griffith 65 noted educator and her invalid sister Florence The case involves a mountain home near Denver where Landy helped build a cabin and took the sisters on rides police reconstruct the events leading to the deaths and a possible plan to travel to Texas with Emily Griffiths before the killings.
In Santa Ana California on June 20 a six men and six women jury was chosen to try Logisse Querell 18 and her college sweetheart George Bud Gollum 21 for the murder of her parents Mr and Mrs Walter E Overell. The state prosecutor Eugene D ill outlined the last steps before the jury begins deliberations after four weeks of stress and strain.
Musgrove's wholesale grocery firm filed a claim for 221.03 against the Board of Control alleging delivery of groceries to the West Virginia State Journal School for Boys at Pruntytown without payment. The action was noted in Charleston on June 20.
Chicago June 20 Five railroad unions representing about 350000 operating employees renewed demands for four cent changes in working rules that sparked the nationwide strike a year ago. Wages for non operating workers were also under review with a proposed twenty cent hourly increase for about one million workers. Railroads estimate cost rises of 568 million annually, while rule changes could add a further total of a billion in annual costs. Loomis cites three rule change types and highlights limits on freight and passenger train lengths as most costly. President Truman proposed settlement adds 2.5 cents per hour to support a 16 cent raise already granted by a prior board.
Isabel Goudy longtime stenographer for John Hancock Life Insurance in New York City dies at 1:40 yesterday in her Maple Avenue home after an extended illness. Executive Vice President W. Van Horn outlined near term B&O railroad spending of about $300,000 on the Parkersburg passenger station and surrounding area to city officials and the board of trade.
Former West Virginia Governor Howard M. Gore, 69, died in Clarksburg while under hospital care after a long career in public service and agriculture. Gore, a Republican, served as 17th governor from 1925 to 1929 and later as a Public Service Commission member, having also been assistant secretary of agriculture under Coolidge.
Muroc California June 20 A United States Army P80 R jet regains the world speed record at 623.8 mph on a 1.86 mile course near Muroc Army Air Field Col Albert Boyd of Ashe ville New Jersey guided the Lockheed built fighter on four runs and the average speed topped 7.8 mph above the prior 616 mph mark set by a British Gloster Meteor The record awaits certification by the Federation Aeronautique Internationale in Paris but observers say the course and rules were met The flight marks the first time in 24 years the United States held the top spot with a P 84 jet raising the mark to 611 mph the same day.
Lake Success June 20 Russia apparently faced defeat in the United Nations today as Britain hoped to move the selection of Trieste's governor to the Security Council for immediate action. Delegates prepared for a 10 30 a m EDT session with Britain reported to have broad support to break the deadlock.
Byron Cornell reports on June 20 that the House is prepared to oppose President Truman by voting to override the Taft Hartley labor bill veto. Leaders expect a three to one margin, with Senate action likely next. A White House aide confirmed Truman may veto, deeming the bill a bad piece of legislation.
Grafton marked the 84th anniversary of West Virginia's founding in a quiet manner with few closures. The Taylor County Court House and First National Bank closed, City Hall and the Post Office stayed open, and the State Employment Service closed for the holiday. the state liquor store did not observe the holiday. Flags were displayed citywide but no ceremonies or planned activities occurred.
A six year old girl Margaret Estep died after a shotgun discharge while she and three other children played at the home of her grandfather Fred Campbell in Putney Charleston district. The incident occurred on June 20 and the weapon fired accidentally. Authorities are investigating the accidental death and no charges have been reported at this time.
President Truman declared the National Emergency and vetoed the Taft Hartley bill provisions. He warned the proposed 80 day cooling off period and secret ballot would encourage rather than prevent giant stoppages in coal and steel. He argued the presidential board of inquiry and court ordered waits would hinder negotiations and empower unions under government auspices.
