One Killed Six Hurt In West Virginia Traffic Mishaps

Grafton high school band leader Paul W. Shahan, a native Graftonian, has turned to composing. His suite Portraits for Orchestra debuted with the West Virginia University Symphony Orchestra under Dr. Weldon Hart at Reynolds Hall, and will be performed by the Fairmont Symphony next fall. The district notes growth in music, with 145 summer band students enrolled and free classes offered by the Taylor County Board of Education. Shahan plans a third band as a pre-step to junior band, and the local group recently led the Strawberry Festival queen’s float. Summer concerts are planned at county playgrounds and a band camp at Camp Caesar August 13.

Water will be turned off in the Fetterman area for about two hours tomorrow morning as the Grafton water department extends the water main at West Boyd and West Washington streets. Residents from Jones Street to the end of the system near the Country Club should plan for washing and household duties. City Manager Curtis D. Decker urged households to draw a reserve supply for the shut-off. A six inch extension will serve over 300 feet to improve fire hydrant service, volume, and pressure as the city complies with Public Service Commission rules.

Young Elkins Man Hurt In Route 9 Route 50 Crash
A young Elkins man was seriously injured and a companion slightly hurt in a crash at the Route 9 and Route 50 junction, midway between Evansville and Fellows. Family Of Three Escapes Serious Injury In Wreck
In Grafton on Saturday night a car carrying Track 33, wife Dorothy 30, and son Larry 10 rolled down a hillside and crashed into a house at 1201 West Boyd. The father, Tracy, was uninjured while the wife sustained a knee injury and the boy a cut on the ear. The car was badly damaged but the house had no damage. A second accident on Main Street involved a Sterling car owned by Paul Edward Sterling, driven by his wife Kathleen Virginia, with no injuries reported.
