House Committee Orders Start On New Security Tax
The House Ways and Means committee moved to draft a bill for a 50 percent rise in Social Security taxes for employers and employees. Opening remarks by Chairman Doughton flagged a finished bill before summer recess, with broad changes to the security program under consideration. The panel approved blanket coverage for WWII veterans’ families for three years at no cost to veterans and debated extending coverage to about 20 million more workers such as farm, self employed, and domestic workers. Approved steps include raising the old age and survivors tax to 1.5 percent and covering over 200,000 maritime workers under unemployment provisions, with state-determined benefits for jobless seamen. If veterans’ coverage advances, widows and children of veterans dying within three years of discharge would receive about 25 dollars monthly, with benefits extending to 18 for children and widow until the last child turns 18. Existing veterans in employment with larger coverage would retain their rights.
