Detroit authorities vowed protection for informants as they rounded up about forty suspected Black Legion members amid an investigation into the beating of Mrs. Dorothy Guthrie 33 who had reported her husband William Guthrie’s distribution of racial and anti Communist literature. Another informant James Stewart of Ecorse was guarded after describing a visit by three strangers. The Michigan tally of suspected night riders reached 41 with William Moore’s detention. Huntington June 18 Judge H Clay Worth ordered a new trial for Richard Adams after a majority verdict in a highway robbery case. Defense attorney H H Darnall Jr informed the judge that jurors were unfamiliar with court procedure. Verdicts must be unanimous, he noted, prompting July 16 retrial.
New York state will seek a rehearing by the U S Supreme Court of the state minimum wage law, ruled unconstitutional 6 to 4 on June 1. Attorney General John J Bennett Jr said the state has 25 days after the decision to file for a rehearing.
The body of George W. Davidson, 48, a brakeman for the Norfolk and Western railroad, was found beside the tracks in Bluefield. Officials believe he was struck by a train, confirming a fatal railroad incident.
John D. M. Hamilton, national chairman, outlined a plan to win the crucial eastern states in the Republican campaign. He predicted Roosevelt should carry six of the 48 states and indicated a generous approach. The New York battleground framing the eastern push led to meetings with state leaders as momentum built.

Holt opposed the Guffey Vinson measure already passed by the house citing no provisions for hours wages or working conditions. Charleston and Huntington endured extreme heat with highs near a record. Huntington reached 100 degrees and Charleston 98 as drought strained crops. A forecast of showers offered relief and promised needed moisture for farm lands.
A. Walter Jr, 28, of New York, was charged with the murder of Blanche Cousins in Nob Hill San Francisco. He confessed claiming conscience troubled him after strangling her on Tuesday night, saying she resisted his advances after they met on a bus between Salt Lake City and San Francisco. The body was found in bed with a silk stocking tied to a bedpost.
Hollywood star Clark Gables and his estranged wife face a possible court airing over a property settlement said to have been signed last September and then altered to December 1934. Gable seeks enforcement of the agreement as the couple, separated since November, weigh divorce.

A mob of about 300, seeking to lynch nine prisoners, dispersed after authorities in Texas swiftly moved the nine held in Wharton and Bay City jails. A white officer was killed during a bonus celebration disturbance, and deputies were injured as the mob attacked. The captives, five men and four women, were moved between jails under secrecy.

Morgantown June 18 Charles Greenberg president of Greenberg Shirt company says he is leaving for New York without further talks with strking girl employees who closed the plant. He notes the Providence R I plant has closed permanently and will be dismantled after a sympathy strike. Strike leaders say workers will not return until the Providence plant reopens.
John B. Easton president of the State Federation of Labor responded to remarks by Delegate Gen try in the house stating that adopting the amendment to the social security bill would provide a real old age pension for West Virginia. Gentry complained to Speaker Pelter then accused Easton of trying to dictate the bill and intimidate procedure with Van A. Bittner international representative for the United Mine Workers.
In Charleston on June 18 a heated House debate over merits of the social security bill unfolded while members waited to vote. Minority Leader Underwood accused Govorner Kump of expanding payrolls against promises, joined by Lafon Hiner and Hysong in the dispute. The Senate approved a beer law inquiry committee report due by November 30, and the House, after a corrected bill delay, voted on whether to amend the social security bill to create a department of public assistance. Delegate Van Sickler sought more space for the board of public works.
The Southern Tenant Farmers Union accused Sheriff Howard Curlin of Crittenden county of overlooking a flogging near Earle aimed at discrediting the union. The incident involved Rev. Claude Williams and Miss Willie Sue Blagden amid a cotton field strike, with another man, Roy Morelock, beaten nearby. The union urged investigation as Attorney General Cummings considered federal action. Governor’s report described blast damage to Francis mine and a family’s collapse.

An explosion wrecked a miner's home in Burgettstown Pennsylvania killing a 7 year old child. The mother and two other children were critically injured in the blast. Local authorities investigated the cause as neighbors gathered at the scene.
