In Philadelphia on June 17 the Republican platform committee faced a race dispute as Texas delegate Orville Bullington urged a southern member on the civil rights subcommittee. A mine car collision at the Olga Coal No 2 mine near Caretta West Virginia left Walter Boatwright of War, West Virginia dead and 17 injured. A train of loaded coal cars derailed down grade and struck a three car man trip, with several workers hospitalized and others treated on site.

Three Million For Farm To Market Roads Fund
Charletson June 17 A second three million dollar allocation for farm to market road construction became available today with the board of public works transferring the sum from the general fund to the state road fund. Previously six million had been released last fall with only half moved to the road fund. The two year twelve million appropriation from surplus funds funds the program with the remaining six million for the next fiscal year. The board also released nineteen thousand nine hundred one dollars and sixty four cents from other surplus appropriations including ten thousand six hundred twenty five dollars for state park development.

Paris June 17 More than 25 towns faced a wave of strikes across France with indications that up to 100,000 workers may be off the job by tonight. Grafton volunteer firemen win prize in Greensboro parade

Four month old Robbin Lynn Starford son of Mr and Mrs William E Starford Jr of 246 Grand Street died yesterday at 3 pm from suffocation after pulling a plastic sheet over his head while playing on his parents bed. Attending physician Dr Paul P Warden said the child passed away before reaching City hospital. Congress approves Navy building program in part
Washington June 17 Congress has approved a 209 million dollar Navy building plan but may fund only about half the total. President Truman signed a 20 million authorization yesterday at Independence Missouri. The House cut several items including 12 million for an Annapolis airport, and overall approved about 98 million with 50 million in contract authority. The Senate must act and may modify funding.
