In a June 17 broadcast from Vichy the 86 year old Petain acknowledged growing discontent in France. He recalled the armistice plea of 1940 and the 1941 warning of a long hard road, blaming both state deficiencies and individuals for public unease while urging faith in the country’s destiny.
The Interstate Commerce Commission ordered an investigation of bituminous coal freight rates to steel producing areas near Youngstown. The probe will determine the legality of West Virginia rates in the Cumberland Piedmont and Fairmont districts Nos 1 and 2, among other areas.

In Brooklyn, a laborer Ernest Schrimpe found a burned and smoldering male body stuffed inside a leatherette cedar chest in a vacant lot near downtown Brooklyn at 5:20 am. Police estimated the victim was about 26 years old. hands and feet burned off, identity not yet confirmed.
Raleigh June 17. James Burch, statistics engineer for the state highway commission, after lengthy calculations, predicted in February that North Carolina highway traffic would fall 29 percent in May. The just completed May survey confirms a drop of exactly 29 percent.
Navy House Naval Affairs Chairman Vinson reveals a major rise in use of wood for roughly 1,1900 small patrol vessels within an $8.55 billion fleet expansion. He notes carriers as the fleet backbone, inland shipbuilding on Great Lakes possible, and deferral of some battleship work to speed carrier construction.
Australian Prime Minister John Curtin warned that Australia could be lost if the war worsens, linking Australia to Libya and Russia while urging continued war loan subscriptions. He cited three major Allied thrusts, including the German advance in Russia and Rommel’s Libya gains, as pivotal to the nation's fate.
Huntington June 17 Police Detective Otis Harrison said Oliver Blanton 39 was arrested on a check forgery charge and admitted he escaped from the Missouri penitentiary in May He is being detained for Missouri authorities.
A Memphis reader sent 75 cents to the Midsouth Fair after hopping the grounds and landing in a mud puddle to avoid the gate fee. He enclosed a note saying he would not sue and that the fee should have been paid.
The House Ways and Means Committee rejected President Roosevelt’s call to split the pending tax bill and fast track excise levies. Officials said the tax plan may take months to pass, while excises could raise about 600 million dollars yearly once implemented. Roosevelt warned the tax program lagged and cost the treasury daily, hoping a bill reaches him later this year.
Washington June 17 The administration disclosed that a large portion of the population has already been fingerprinted during wartime. Congress may move to require universal fingerprinting for all Americans. FBI purchases 48 million cards and continues collecting prints as part of wartime and postwar administration.
A British source said an Italian naval squadron in the central Mediterranean was battered by U S Army Air Forces and the RAF and did not contact the Tobruk bound convoy. Convoys to Malta and Tobruk were delivered at considerable cost, described as a limited success. Reports suggested Allied losses, not fully disclosed.
In Charleston on June 17 attorney general W S Wysong said police and firefighters called to military service receive leaves of absence and restoration upon return, preserving seniority. He quoted the statute indicating officers may resume duty after completing service.
Director William B. Mackay of the United Steel Workers of America announced a new contract with the Huntington International Nickel plant. The base rate is 75 cents an hour with hour changes and provisions for seniority and union security, and the agreement will be signed next week.
Logan County records a second railway fatality in a week as 28 year old Charles Bryant dies after being struck along the Chesapeake and Ohio tracks near Mount Hope. Bryant, rejected for Army service, was returning from Huntington to Shively when the accident occurred.
Cairo June 17 British guns and tanks reportedly beat off two Axis attacks at Sidi Rezegh and Acroma as Rommel sought to storm Tobruk before newly landed supplies could aid the defense. A military commentator said the position remained substantially unchanged with a semicircular defense around Tobruk. The Germans, though, outnumbered in tanks and anti-tank guns, pressed the line as three weeks of fighting wore down US built General Grant tanks. Some sources say Tobruk supplies may include weapons to counter-attack and recover damaged tanks from prior withdrawals.
Clarksbury June 17 A Harrison County criminal court jury acquitted Gertrude Harold and George Ofterdinger of the February murder of John Harold. The state had charged Harold with striking her husband and placing the body beneath a standing train.
A 14 year old girl Mattie Pearl, and her father Frank Morgan, were convicted of second degree murder in the May 9 shooting of Mattie Pearl’s husband Damon Manning. The girl testified she shot to prevent being killed. Morgan was found guilty of aiding and abetting. Sentences set at 20 years.
Eldorado Kansas June 17 A hospital bound man Walter H Whitlock expects to leave next Saturday hoping for cuffless trousers after his right hip injury from a snag in his pant cuff.
