Bank of England to be rebuilt by modern method
The Bank of England will be rebuilt replacing the old four acre Threadneedle Street structure. Governors and directors deem a modern building necessary to meet current needs. Since the war six outside branches were opened in London to house expanding clerical staff and new departments. Established 1691, it is Europe’s oldest national bank. The present outer part dates from 1788, central section from 1742-4. The bank’s walls have withstood riots and attacks, guarded nightly by soldiers since 1780.
