Trans Atlantic telephone use grows with higher costs
Satisfying curiosity at twenty five dollars a minute was once seen as expensive but drew many first trans Atlantic calls. Officials note radio telephone service between America and England remains limited to business interests and wealthy travelers. Daily New York to London calls number ten to twenty five, while other cities report normal levels. There are about 18 million North American telephones available for trans Atlantic service versus 1.43 million in Great Britain. Upgrades in equipment spur calls, though engineers work to prevent outside eavesdropping on private conversations since service began January 7 1927.
