A presidential emergency board recommended a 40 hour week and higher pay for about 75,000 railroad employees while denying wage increases for roughly 126,000 trashmen and conductors. The panel urged stronger action against Communist underground activity and called for a DOJ report in the Amerasia case.

The first night midget auto racing in West Virginia begins tonight at the speedway between Clarksburg and Fairmont, run by the Tri State Racing Association. Shorty Parsons, brother of this year’s Indianapolis winner, drives a midget car among the entrants.

The unions involved include the Brotherhood of Railroad Trainmen and the Order of Railway Conductors. The outcome could influence settlements for three other unions.
A United Nations diplomat in New York reports Russia is likely to launch a new peace offensive if it attends the General Assembly in September. Russia boycotts 30 UN bodies over Chinese Nationalist representation, while a Soviet style peace resolution from 1949 remains rejected by Western powers. No immediate replacement of the Chinese Nationalists by Chinese Communists is foreseen despite Moscow’s demand.
In Tokyo an Army court martial sentenced 18 year old Private Granville R. Sturdivent of Coalton Randolph County West Virginia to ten years confinement and a dishonorable discharge after he was found guilty of stealing 7423 Japanese yen about 20 dollars from a Japanese tea house. The accomplice, a Japanese involved in the robbery, received a three year prison term.
Clarksburg attorney Donald R. Wilson former Legion West Virginia commander spoke at Huntington Elks Lodge 313 Flag Day ceremonies. He said Russia bears responsibility for a troublesome period in the history of the American flag and warned that only war would end its troubled status.
Marines at Quantico stage a postwar battle exercise for President Truman. The event features beach assault simulations with tanks aircraft and flame throwers to demonstrate capture of fortified positions. Truman travels aboard the Williamsburg and witnesses the drills with top military officials present.
An Air Force bomber crash on Rocky Spruce Knob near Circleville WV killed nine, with engines found 1,500 feet from impact. Investigators search wreckage for a cause to prevent future losses. Victims include three regulars and five reservists from Hill Air Force Base Utah and a passenger from Hamilton AFB California.
A Florida man, James Donaldson, 28, was captured by State Trooper E L Duckworth on Country Club road near Builders Service and Supply. He and his wife were en route to Rock Jake, suspected of passing checks from $5 to $1,000 across six states totaling over $1,500. Donaldson confessed to the spree, and authorities planned to return him to Clarksburg for charges.
Grafton Memorial City Post No. 3081 VFW is represented by Commander Walter Robinson and Jim McCracken at the 1950 West Virginia VFW encampment in Huntington. About 2,500 attendees expected. National Director of Rehabilitation Colonel George E. Iams of Washington to speak Thursday. The event concludes Saturday with a military equipment parade.
