Return From New York and Okinawa War News
Mrs Dorothy Culver of West Main street and Mrs Pred C Jackson of Blueville returned from New York where Mrs Jackson bought for Heflin tyle shop. In Okinawa Maj Gen Pedro Del Valle warned the Japanese could be crushed in two days or two weeks. Air force Corsairs bombed suspected Japanese headquarters as 19 220 gallons of gasoline and 465 rockets were used in the raid. The great fire raid, on the 76th day of the campaign, drove smoke over the battlefield while also noting many Japanese surrendered or killed themselves rather than surrender. In the UN veto talks Prime Minister Peter Fraser said the veto question was not decided on its merits and warned against destroying any hope of an international organization.
