United Press projects a five day West Virginia outlook with near to slightly below normal temperatures. Cool Wednesday followed by warmer Thursday and Friday, then cooler Sunday. Showers are expected Friday and Saturday totaling about half to three quarters of an inch.
Gov. William C. Marland announced that Charles E. Nethken after 28 years on the Public Service Commission was replaced by Assistant Attorney General T. D. Kauffelt, age 30, with no explanation given for the dismissal.
Governor George M Leader signed a bill authorizing a Pennsylvania turnpike extension from near Pittsburgh to the West Virginia border. Co sponsors John H Dent William J Lane John J Haluska and Eustace H Bane said the Pennsylvan ia Turnpike Commission should negotiate with West Virginia authorities to route from Princeton to Morgantown linking with the Pennsylvania line near New Stanton.
Nation marks the 178th birthday of the American flag with widespread displays and a national proclamation by President Eisenhower urging citizens to honor the flag. In Washington an Army chorus planned a debut of a new song for the flag, tied to the 1777 Continental Congress decision.
Three lone American flags marked Main Street as VFW and American Legion crews planned flags at City Hall and the Post Office. Weather halted displays as Dr. Charles M. Wells said rain risk kept crews from placing the flags, citing that the National Ensign should not be flown in bad weather.
In Trenton New Jersey Traffic Court Judge Casimir EB heard a case involving his wife Margaret who stood before him charged with passing. He fined her $15 as conditions were forecast to brighten with warmer temperatures and a return of summer after a week of rain and cold.
Milton Eisenhower, president of Pennsylvania State University and brother of the President, will visit Germany in August, according to official sources.
The West Virginia University Board of Governors sponsored scholarships announced by the Department of Speech named eight winners. Ruth Ann Booth Carolyn Wet Hale Weston and Fred DelSar do Morgantown won Interscholastic Drama Festival scholarships. Ruth Annooth Carolyn Wet zel and Dave Peters Parkersburg Margie Rawley Ravenswood and Jerry Rector Bluefield received Forensic scholarships.
Pusan Korea The U S Army completed plans today to turn over to the Republic of Korea the job of supplying its town troops. The transfer will take place June 25 the fifth anniversary of the Communist attack on South Korea.
Indian delegate Krishna Menon after a 49 minute preliminary meeting with President Eisenhower and Secretary Dulles spoke at the airport. He noted tensions seem to ease as efforts to improve world stability continue. Menon added the fate of 11 other American fliers was not raised in the talks.
New York police say a payroll bandit was shot dead by an officer in a downtown gun battle today as a $4,000 payroll was recovered from the bandit's body. At least two bystanders were wounded while pedestrians dived for cover during the shootout. An elevatorman was shot in the groin while helping a 19-year-old woman messenger from whom the payroll was taken.
Franklin County grand jury indicted Walter A Swift 23 on charges he took a purse belonging to a blood bank secretary after first giving a pint of blood. The case centers on theft tied to a donor procedure in Columbus Ohio.
A 2000 mile long cloud brought rain to the desert Southwest halting a crack train near Las Vegas Nevada. The same vast system slowly moved toward the Gulf of St Lawrence after 12 days of damp chilly air across the East. Temperatures rose 20 to 25 degrees further east signaling a return to June-like warmth.
In Bethesda Ohio a farming and coal mining area reacts to a Nevada prospector buying a 1000 acre tract for coal seam mining. The prospectors son in law, an Atomic Energy Commission employee, checked the site with a geiger counter during a visit.
London officials said the foreign office records show 16 Britons detained abroad. Foreign Undersecretary Lord John said 11 British subjects are believed detained in Russia, plus one believed to possess British nationality. Officials noted Soviets claim some as citizens of Russia, Poland, or Romania.
DETROIT The CIO united Auto Workers opened preliminary contract talks with American Motors Corp today aiming to extend the guaranteed wage principle from Ford and General Motors to the rest of the auto industry. The talks with Nash-Kelvinator and other firms loom through August as AM’s stance remains resistant to a broad settlement. Walter Reuther indicated he would not force the Big Three pattern on smaller companies but left open the possibility they may seek similar wage terms.
