Labor Law Drive Stalls as Veto Looms and Strikes Threaten

Washington June 12 The drive for a broad new labor law stalled today as advocates paused awaiting public clamor or a major strike crisis before renewing efforts to pass a long‑range bill. Bipartisan spokesmen urged a wave of public reaction against President Truman's veto of the Case bill and House inaction. They indicated only a new major disruption or public demand could build votes to enact a permanent regulatory measure this year. They spoke on condition of anonymity. Some legislators still favor tying the Case proposal to Truman's emergency strike control plan awaiting House action after passage in both chambers. The measure would authorize government seizure of essential strike-bound plants and require union leaders to take affirmative action.
