John Harris Senate Clerk Dies After Stroke at 77
John T. Harris long serving clerk of the West Virginia Senate for 35 years died at his home in Kersburg after a stroke. A former newspaperman, he aged 77, widow and daughter Mrs Wood Stewart of Philadelphia survive. He published the West Virginia handbook and manual known as the blue book, first issued in 1916 and adopted officially in 1917. Harris was born April 27 1851 at Harrisville and graduated from West Virginia University in 1875. He worked in newspaper work, then shorthand reporting for 20 years, later serving on mine investigation committees and the Virginia debt commission.
