A lone plane near Lunghwa airport caused disturbances with possible small bombs heard by residents. Airport officials could not identify the craft, and the field remained undamaged. The incident coincides with Shanghai’s defense against foreign shipping amid reported mines in the Yangtze Estuary.
The Industrial and Publicity Commission began a survey to measure West Virginia tourist spending. Director Robert W. McKinnon said 1946 expenditures were 44.276 million, 1947 78 million, and last year about 146.5 million. The study will also track overnight stays and seasonality across tourist establishments.

Maximum penalties could reach 155 years in prison and 60,000 dollars in fines per defendant. Other defendants include Harold A. Karsten Abraham Karatz Floyd Cerf Robert Pierce Fred Rockelman and ties to Briggs Manufacturing Ford and Chrysler.

Four Chesapeake and Potomac Telephone Company of West Virginia employees received bronze Vail medals and $100 for lifesaving aid after an auto train crash near Grafton on December 23, 1948. Lewis J. Crum Donald M. Teter Jules L. Moore and two others provided first aid, summoned help, and restrained bystanders from moving victims until ambulances arrived, earning commendation from an attending physician.

Grafton City Council will meet at City Hall at 7 30 PM to conduct the canvass of ballots from Tuesday's municipal election. The levy failed and Dorsey Bolyard and Lindsay T Mahaffey were elected to council. They take office July 1 and may attend the June 21 regular meeting.
A motorcycle collided with a porch in Steubenville killing Harry G. Rutherford, 30, of Weirton West Virginia. A passenger, Alicia McMillen, 22, of New Cumberland Ohio, was injured.
Six Grafton girls were selected to attend Gill State at Jackson Mills for a week starting June 12. Sponsored by local clubs and groups, the honorees include Mary Warden Lela Hawn Barbara Redinger Marcia Malone Anna Marie Saccone and Barbara Lough. Selections were made by local school officials based on academics health character and leadership with aim to gain government knowledge and community service.
Lawrence Lee Hall 44, longtime Flemington High School coach and teacher, died yesterday at Myer's Clinic Philippi after a three year illness. A Graf ton resident, he lived in the area all his life and attended Grafton High School. He graduated from Fairmont State College in 1929 and taught at Bowlesburg, Daybrook, then Flemington for 15 years. He was among local star athletes known as the 4 H s Clyde Hickman Rink Hefner and Hug Henry. He was pursuing a master's degree at West Virginia University.
Defense attorney Charles Margiotti told federal court that three government men were shadowing the William G. Lias jury in the $1,000,000 income tax evasion case against the Wheeling racetrack and night club owner. The panel is kept in strict seclusion with overnight detention, censored references, and constant witness security. Margiotti, a former Pennsylvania attorney general, alleged the surveillance occurred as jurors walked between courthouse and hotel.
Charleston reports steady progress by major coal firms in West Virginia to reclaim strip mined lands. Gerald Noland 49, one of two remaining escapees from the state penitentiary, was recaptured in Ravenswood after being taken from a Baltimore and Ohio train. The Parkersburg area three day search ends with Noland returned to custody. 23 year old Eddie Starcher remains at large. Ravenswood patrolmen reported Noland was taken off a passenger train and offered no resistance. State police to escort him to Moundsville.
Mountaineer Boys State plans a permanent flag design adopted by camp leaders. High school juniors in Jackson's Mill citizenship program will vote on the proposal tonight as a constitutional amendment. The flag would be white with a blue border and feature a Stonewall Jackson bust in a central circle with the legends Mountaineer Boys State and Citizenship, plus the American Legion seal at each corner.
