Infantry Regiment Honored for Luzon Campaign Actions
The 149th Infantry Regiment earned a battle commendation from Major General William O. Chase for its Luzon operations in 1945. Landing at La Raz on January 29, it moved through Zig Zag Pass and around Japanese positions, destroying much of the 39th Infantry and aiding the liberation of Bataan. The unit continued an offensive toward Mt Pinatubo, overcoming stiff Japanese defenses with significant enemy casualties and limited losses. The commendation was awarded to the regiment and its commander Colonel Winfred G. Skelton.

Lumber price limits set by OPA for Appalachian logs
The Office of Price Administration announced a fixed dollars-and-cents price for log run lumber in the Appalachian hardwood region. Previously priced by lowest grade, many small mills sold on log run grades, with prices rising faster than on grade lumber. A small mill is defined by annual production thresholds since October 1941. Hard and softwood price caps per thousand board feet vary by thickness, with caps ranging from 32 to 36.50 dollars. The note also refers to U S military bases on Pacific islands and Dominion forestry, set against Pearl Harbor and postwar context.
