Coronado Case Ends Labor Unions Liable Under Sherman Act
The Supreme Court ruled that labor organizations can be held liable under the Sherman Antitrust Law for acts by their members during strikes. The Coronado coal cases in Arkansas, involving United Mine Workers of America and several coal companies, saw courts treble damages for property losses tied to a 1914 strike. The decision weighs whether unincorporated unions may be sued and assigns responsibility to district leaders for conduct that restrained interstate commerce.
