Senate Unable To Finish Work Before Convention
Washington June 6 With a week left before the Republican National Convention Senator Watson Indiana Republican leader told newspapermen it is impossible to finish legislative duties in time for members to attend the convention. If adjournment is not taken by July 1 the senators will miss the June 14 convention and perhaps the Democratic meeting June 27. Other senators agreed one week cannot suffice for remaining measures. Foremost among these is the economy bill and relief. Watson's view was challenged by Fess Republican National Committee chairman who said Congress might finish by June 14. Congress entered the final week with vital legislation and aims to finish the billion dollar tax bill today for Hoover’s signature. The economy bill relief legislation and appropriations remain hurdles before adjournment. The senate may pass the economy measure tonight while the house plans to act tomorrow on the Garner relief bill. Both faces a rocky journey before enactment as Hoover outlined a fourfold plan for economic rehabilitation.
