William Adlington, jailed since last December for unlawful sale of intoxicating liquor, is to be released following a gubernatorial pardon. Governor Dawson grants clemency with conditions, citing poverty and family hardship, and noting the need to balance punishment with reform and protection of dependents.
Wednesday evening the pending sale of Roger's Meat Market to John Kinney and Hop Maloney closed. The new proprietors will take charge after all sale details. Roger’s occupation ends due to illness, plans to move to a larger city for treatment amid steady business and strong patronage. The price reportedly near $1000.
Ella Smith one of the defendants in the case before Squire Lilly was arrested this morning and placed under a 500 bond for her appearance at Monday afternoon’s hearing. The capture follows the earlier flight of Mrs Smith and her husband from Simpson to Parkerstown area delaying proceedings a week. She returned home then came to the city for arrest.
Elijah P. Wright, rural delivery carrier on route No 3 from South Columbus to Shadeville Ohio, is said to be the oldest mail carrier in service. At about 50 years old he has delivered US mails for 55 years, including a private route before joining rural delivery in 1901. He covers his 22 mile route regularly with vigor and good health.
An unsigned ad claims Arthur Wri "Bindi" offers finishing services and urges patrons to become pleased patrons. The text then shifts to a harsh gubernatorial threat about arrest and imprisonment for alleged intoxication, failure to support family, or other offenses, detailing jail terms and the governor’s authority, with jail release conditions to be explained to Adlington in the county of Taylor.
Oak Camp No 5422 of the Modern Woodmen of America will hold annual memorial services on Sunday June 16. Members meet at the hall at 2 PM then proceed to cemeteries to decorate graves. Committees have prepared a program and seek prominent speakers for an elaborate observance.
The annual convention will be held in Fairmont Thursday and Friday with many Grafton residents attending beyond delegates. Presbyterian delegates Miss Rhea Heironimous and Miss Ada Norum, Evangelical Lutheran delegates Miss Lillian Holt, Miss Katie Keolx, Miss Carrie Wehn, Miss Lillian Leuthke, Miss Fredricka Keolx, Miss Nellie Wehn, and Rev. A F Richardson attend. Rev Richardson travels Thursday. others go Friday morning. A featured lecture by Mrs H E Munroe on The Story of the Reformation is set for Friday evening at the opera house. Local churchgoers plan to attend.
Arrangements completed by the teacher and infant class for a church entertainment and social at St Pauls M E Church on June 14. The program includes literature and music with a social featuring ice cream strawberries and cake. The event promises to be interesting.
Talbott Bros, contracted for the new street car line, are driving the project rapidly despite heavy weather. A large workforce is at work and officials believe the line will be completed within the specified time.
In police court this morning J. W. Howley was the sole offender, arrested Wednesday night for drunkenness. He received the usual fine of three dollars and costs, and for failure to pay was ordered to work on the streets.
The annual decoration day exercises of Grafton Camp No. 4 Woodmen of the World will be held Sunday afternoon at Binemont cemetery. A monument to Doreey H. Eleteher will be unveiled after an oration by Rev. E. Burton Reese and remarks by Rev. O. L. Queen. Members meet at Red Men’s hall at 1 PM. a parade will form and proceed to the cemetery to decorate graves and unveil the new monument.
A large Mystic Lodge contingent from Grafton travels to Fairmont for the dedication of the new Masonic temple valued at about 125060 dollars. The seven story building will house the post office on the first floor and lodge rooms on other floors, with many prominent Masons from across the state expected.
Rural delivery carriers on routes handling five thousand or more pieces per month for three consecutive months in the quarter ending June 30 will no longer be required to count mail delivered and collected after July 1. Postmasters have been instructed accordingly.
Members of the Presbyterian church plan a Friday afternoon excursion to Thornton for a day in the woods. The party, comprising six or more families, will hunt ferns and flowers and enjoy a prepared dinner, with participants having arranged prior plans.
Just before noon today the Mannington team and the Elks were scheduled to play at Bike ball park but the game was postponed due to ground damage from heavy rain. An early reschedule is planned, though no date could be stated yet. Further games are not booked, though several partial arrangements exist.

Sunday afternoon the annual sermon under the Woman's Christian Temperance Union of Grafton will be preached by Rev H M Howard pastor of Andrews M E Church. Ladies of the union will attend and the public is invited to hear the message.
The Ladies of the Presbyterian church finish plans for an exchange at Roger’s meat market on Saturday afternoon. They will offer homemade pies cakes candies and other treats to support the church. The event highlights the ladies culinary skills and aims for strong patronage.
Through the adjutant general's office two companies of regular infantry will serve with the state troops at Camp Smith Kanawha City from June 20 to 30. A request for a battalion to aid the unit could not be granted due to most of the standing army remaining on duty in Cuba and the Philippines. Postmaster Love asks the Department for additional staff as mail volumes rise and several county post offices are closed. Inspectors report the Grafton office requires more space and a full upgrade, including new rooms furniture and letter boxes. Eskine has moved to larger quarters, and Inspector E Allen will inspect Kikini’s new facilities this evening.
An hour around noon a horse hitched in the east end bolted from its tether, wrecking the buggy and injuring the horse’s leg. The owner’s name could not be confirmed at the scene.
