City of Grafton appoints Allender as police judge to fill the vacancy left by Richard B. Bord’s resignation. He will start tomorrow morning, succeeding Mag. P. Lucas who has acted temporarily. Measles Decrease Reported Across West Virginia

Seventy four new measles cases were reported in West Virginia in the week ended May 29 by the State Health Department. Washington June 2 Union leaders say the White House bid to settle the railroad labor dispute has failed completely after a lengthy White House conference with Presidential assistant John Steelman. Charleston dispatch reports Appalachian Electric Power challenged a tentative tax valuation increase of 3.36 million dollars at public works hearings. Police traced a tale of a man and woman from Winthrop Mass who allegedly shot a man near Middlesboro Kentucky after a carnival journey through Harlan and Middlesboro. Grafton to switch street lighting to Monongahela Power

The Grafton City Council signed a contract with Monongahela Power to purchase power for operating the city pump station and to convert street lighting to the utility. Power will begin within about 90 days or when ordered equipment arrives. The council also asked the city attorney to draft the conversion ordinance. Child Slightly Injured When Hit By Auto

Three year old Judith Hunt, daughter of Mrs Mary Kathryn Hunt of 2 Barrett Street, sustained minor injuries after being struck by an automobile Sunday afternoon beneath the Bridge Street bridge on Front Street. The vehicle, driven by Willam of Route 3, reportedly struck the child, leaving bruises and scratches.

Judge Goldsborough warns that coal strike would be national tragedy

In Washington on June 2 federal Judge T Alan Goldsborough warned it would be a national tragedy if a coal strike occurs next month.
