Pope May Return to Former Status as Voluntary Prisoner
June 2 report from Staine outlines Mussolini dissolving Catholic youth clubs and Pope Pius defending them, sparking speculation the pope may resume as a voluntary prisoner in the Vatican and the papal state may be dissolved. The Vatican argues the concordat was violated by the action, while Mussolini says Catholic clubs became political. The dispute centers on the Lateran Treaty and the concordat, signed 1929, and potential church state negotiations. Cardinal Gasparri is said to be involved in shaping the crisis.

Presbyterians Flag States For Commercializing Divorce
Pittsburgh June 2 controversy moved today from the path of the general assembly of the Presbyterian Church in the U S A. Appeased by elimination of qualified approval of birth control from the report of its own special commission on marriage divorce and remarriage. The assembly tabled a motion expressing regret at elimination of its commission s birth control report as marking the way in which we are going. The assembly swung solidly behind its commission on marriage which held that there is a recrudescence of paganism with Hollywood blazing the way and Nevada prostituting its statehood for 30 pieces of silver and that competition to cheapen and commercialize divorce leads to no general improvement.
