Hoeven of Iowa signaled he will object to Thursday to Monday recesses, a single objection capable of blocking them.
Herbert Hattis an 11 year old from Chicago won the Freckle King title after flashing his freckled back before judge George Minchin of Santa Fe. Sally Brady 9 from Evanston won the Freckle Queen title as hundreds of children with 100 plus freckles attended the fair. In Washington the Senate appropriations committee weighs the foreign aid bill with options to reopen hearings strip amendments or restore the original form.
Honolulu lawmakers move to end Hawaii 90 day dock strike by placing the territorial government in stevedoring. CIO Longshoremen call for spreading the tie up to the Pacific coast as a special session ends with Senate and House agreeing on a precedent smashing bill. PARIS Parisian upper house backs Atlantic Pact 284 to 20 after lower house approval. Awaiting President Auriol’s formal ratification.
The National Safety Council reports 13 810 traffic deaths for the first six months of 1949, only 100 fewer than the 1948 period. Despite increased mileage of six percent, the rate fell to 7 deaths per 100 million miles. Twenty two states and 200 of 471 large cities saw declines, with 128 cities reporting no fatalities.
The National Convention of the Peronist Party proclaimed President Juan Domingo Peron their candidate for reelection in 1952.
The Baltimore and Ohio Railroad won Public Service Commission approval to discontinue one daily passenger train each way between Fairmont and Morgantown and to close its Porters agency in Clendenin County. Train No. 69 currently leaves Grafton at 7 20 a.m., arrives Morgantown 8 55 with a Fairmont stop. No. 70 departs Morgantown 5 55 p.m., arrives Grafton 10 40. The commission said the Fairmont to Grafton segment would be kept, noting Pullman traffic no longer justifies the trains. Porters agency closure deemed not unduly inconvenient as little business is handled there beyond gas shipments via Clendenin. Representatives plan to seek further authority to discontinue passenger service next Friday.
Secretary of Defense Johnson told the House Foreign Affairs Committee that U. S. arms aid to friendly nations may run four or five years at diminishing annual costs. He framed the estimate as a personal view while seeking support for President Truman's one year 1.45 billion program to arm Europe, with Joint Chiefs of Staff backing.
Washington sources say the secret testimony of John Maragon, a fast talking White House visitor, was labeled plenty hot stuff. Maragon, a one time bootblack, claimed many top officials by first names and named Maj. Gen. Harry H. Vaughan as a close contact. He testified behind closed doors to senators probing influence in government contract awards.

Singer Marjorie Hughes daughter of Frankie Carle testified yesterday that her husband a piano player preferred staying home playing ping pong and refused to take her out in the evenings. The four year marriage ended in divorce in Los Angeles.
Charleston banking officials released figures showing combined resources of all state banks and trust companies totaling 3,480,909,999.44 at June 30. Banking Commissioner John H. Hoffman called the report a healthy financial condition, noting deposits dipped to 439,220,773.44 from a record 439,? but within reason. Loans and discounts rose by 730,328.45 to 138,619,861.19.
Deaths from the late July heat wave rose to at least 27 in eastern cities. The hot humid spell shows no immediate relief for the area, though a mass of cooler Canadian air moved southeast into the upper Mississippi Valley and toward Michigan, northern Illinois and Indiana. Forecasters said further cooling into the east and south looks unlikely.
Eugene J. Sapp USN seaman son of Mr and Mrs Eddie Sapp of Blueville addition Grafton serves aboard escort carrier USS Bairoko. He is to leave San Diego California this month for a cruise to Hawaii and the Mariannas Islands and visit Pacific ports on liberty. The Bairoko will return to San Diego early September.

Waynesburg residents hunted rain on July 29 as folklore demanded, painting umbrellas, raincoats, and even rain-charged tricks. Firefighters charged motorists for dirty cars while some wore rubber boots. The forecast offered only a slight chance of a brief thundershower, leaving attorney John Daily amused as he set aside his law books for the day.
Huntington city council approved two ordinances raising the gross sales tax and creating an amusement tax amid business opposition. Officials expect about 100000 extra from the sales tax and 25000 yearly from a two cent per ticket amusement levy to cover shortfalls after the state liquor profits distribution was ruled unconstitutional.
Washington reports President Truman’s surprise picks bring Tom Clark to the Supreme Court seat left by Frank Murphy and J Howard McGrath to the Attorney General post. McGrath would likely resign as Democratic chairman once confirmed, opening his Rhode Island seat for William M Boyle Jr.
A group of dog lovers formed the Grafton Dog Lover's association to stop stray dogs and raise funds for humane equipment. Mayor Dorsey Bolyard joined as charter member and will push city action. J R Barton named chairman. funds to buy kennels and 72 hour dog care, with fees set at one dollar annually.
Two locals faced fines after traffic violations. Hubert Amos Myers of Route 1 Simpson paid 50 dollars and costs for speeding on U S Route 119 south. Amos drove 60 mph in a 56 mph zone. Earl L Satterfield, 21, Route 2, paid 10 dollars for hazardous driving before Magistrate C P Lucas. State Trooper G F Randall was the arresting officer. Lelia Ruth Daniels filed for divorce from Draper Ronald Daniels and sought alimony and an injunction to prevent molestation.
A stove explosion ignited an overhead apartment fire that destroyed the Post Office in a Mason County community. No injuries were reported. Postmistress Mrs J W Diddle fled the building and could not save contents. Middleport and Pomeroy fire units assisted, tearing down enclosing structures to halt spread. the apartment was unoccupied.
The Grafton Rotary club will hold luncheon meetings at Hotel Grafton at 12:15 p m on Thursdays during August replacing the usual 6 15 p m dinners. Last night’s program featured Dr C M Cain describing a fishing trip to Canada.
East Side barber Charles Aparino is named in a $25,000 common pleas petition filed by Edward Nelson. The suit alleges Aparino twisted an 18 month old baby's neck during a first haircut on June 24, leaving the child David Nelson with a head tilt of about 90 degrees and unable to move it.
Two new arrivals at the City hospital were announced. A daughter was born to Mr and Mrs James Wiseman Route 5 Grafton at 1 a.m. July 28, weighing seven pounds eleven and a half ounces. Mr and Mrs Ray Moore Route 4 Tunkelton are the parents of a son born at 9 14 a.m. Thursday weighing five pounds elf ounces.
