Clever Thief Mutilates Wartburg Tapestries in Thuringia
Weimer July 15 Two valuable Gobelin tapestries of the Wartburg dating from the 15th century were mutilated by unknown thieves who cut strips to sell abroad. The tapestries, once in the Grand Ducal House of Saxony collection, were sold to an art collector in Cologne and later placed at the Kaiser Friedrich Museum in Berlin for expert appraisal. A missing 90 cm strip and a 60 cm strip were cut from the two pieces, cleverly interlocking to form a single design. The incident prompted protests in the Thuringian Diet as officials seek recovery of the missing portions and potential prosecutions for any suggestion of tampering.
