Supreme Court Justice Frank Murphy died at 7 45 am today at Henry Ford hospital aged 56 from coronary occlusions He was appointed to the Supreme Court in 1940 by Franklin D Roosevelt Earlier he served Michigan governor and Philippine governor general He was attorney general of the United States Murphy never married and was known as a leading political figure defending labor — his career spanned governor and national roles with strong ties to Roosevelt and labor events of the 1930s.
Hugh D. Scott announced his resignation as Republican national chairman with A. T. Bert Howard of Nebraska emerging as the likely successor. A compromise under which Howard becomes chair, and former Senator John Danaher of Connecticut serves as executive director, is discussed as Scott plans to hand in his resignation at the national committee meeting on August 4.
A walkout was reported idling Pocahontas Fuel company mines under John L. Lewis three day week. Sproles declined to confirm the walkout. UMW officials unavailable for comment. Sources say miners did not appear at Rolfe and Angle mines in McDowell county and the Sagamore mine in Mercer county.
Police located 10 year old Donald Patterson who fled last night after an accidental shooting of 6 year old David Kelfer. He was found at Reeves Corner in Somerset County about 24 miles from home and is being returned to Johnstown where Kelfer remains in fair condition in a local hospital.
President Truman flies to Chicago for a foreign policy statement at 4 p.m. EST during the Diamond Jubilee convocation of Shriners at Soldier Field. Thousands attend as Illinois Senators Lucas and Douglas join the president on the Inde pendence for the trip, with a lineup of top aides and military officers aboard.

In Groveland Florida a mob of armed white men burned down three Black homes amid escalating racial tensions. Earlier, two Black residents were arrested for raping a 17 year old white woman and beating her husband, with another Black individual taken into custody and a fourth sought. No occupants were present in the houses.
More than 4,000 soft coal workers across five nearby mines halted work as pickets encircled pits. Timbermen linked to the United Construction Workers, aligned with UMW, protested wage cuts by refusing to use non union timber. State police near Agnes mine freed trapped truck drivers escorted from the area.

The Grafton City Council meets tonight at 8 at City Hall to discuss the 1949 50 budget. Officials say the proposed expenditures are about 102 150 with revenues about 10 000 short, risking cuts to basic services and police shifts. Citizens may attend and speak.
Charleston officials report progress on a 50 million dollar secondary road program with 4.5 million in road bonds auctioned. Bonds will be 15 year notes retired annually starting July 1, 1950, with a four to five year issuance span depending on labor and prices. The road commission met with Commissioner Cavendish and advisers Easley Biddle and Bonar to review primary and secondary construction plans.

Charleston dispatch reports the Board of Control expects an electric chair at the state prison in Moundsville to be ready for use in about 18 weeks. Authorized by the 1949 legislature, materials and installation will be supplied and supervised by General Electric at a cost of 5383 dollars.
In Gettysburg Pennsylvania state police questioned Nelson E. Schultz a 28 year old blind veteran after a five ton truck overturned on a back mountain road killing his four year old brother Barry Schultz. Six other family members were injured. The trooper said Merele Schultz 11 sat on Nelsons lap steering while Nelson operated the pedals from behind the wheel.
Two men died after a shooting following a family dispute near Welch on Saturday. Everett Brown a 26 year old miner died yesterday and Millard Trimble a 32 year old mine motorman and father of four died a few hours after the affray.
Washington labor leader Emil Riege, president of the CIO textile workers, told ADA hosted talks that unemployment cities form a breeding ground for communism as jobless workers listen to demagogic appeals. He warned that persistent problems will give the communists a field day.
