The Calico Queen contest moves into its second phase as 17 contestants work to secure votes by renewing or soliciting subscriptions to The Grafton Sentinel. A judging panel will tabulate results with a winner to be announced August 6. top finishers join the queen’s court and the champion could advance to the West Virginia State Fair queen contest.

Using the new engine wagon with 500 gallon capacity, crews will start at the Post Office and work roof to roof, funded by building owners to reduce the $9,800 balance needed for the $18,000 project.

Eleven deaths tied to electrocution, drowning, and heart attack. A cool air mass caused scattered showers from the Alleghenies to New England.
A five year old collie named Frisky was badly burned when neighborhood boys doused his coat and set him on fire. A girl fainted and another was frightened. Lore Jackson Jr. and Neil Jackson were away at camp. Frisky miraculously recovered after veterinary care and is expected to live.
West Virginia saw nine violent deaths over the weekend including five traffic fatalities and other incidents. Notable cases include Joseph F. Sluzas 67, killed in a Fayet teville auto accident. John Hyatt 17, injured youth died in Welch hospital. Glenn Louix 12, struck by a Beverly driver near Elkins. and Allen Phillips 15, who died after falling from a truck at Muddy Creek Mountain. Additional fatalities occurred near Oak Hill and Riverton as investigations continue.
A coroner's jury will meet in Morgantown to determine the cause of death of William R. Morris 42 general manager of Morgan town Printing and Binding Company. Morris was pulled from a pool at the county 4 H camp. Authorities said it appeared Morris suffered a heart attack.
In West Virginia Senate President Ralph J. Bean named ten appointees to the State Constitution Revision Commission. The 30 member panel, created last session, will study the state constitution and suggest eliminations of outdated provisions. Bean’s selections include Cramer Gibson, Harry Hoffman, Wesley Tinker, Charles McElwee, George Wallace Jr., John Houchins, Roy Hollis, Charles Johnson, Ernest Lee, and Mrs. W. E. King from towns including Kingwood, Charleston, Wheeling, Huntington, Bluefield, Martinsburg, Clarksburg, Morgantown, and Keyser. Gov. Underwood is expected to name ten more appointees.
More than 50,000 Scouts are encamped at Valley Forge Park with about 30,000 visitors on Sunday, the largest turnout since opening. The jamboree continues through Thursday with programs of campfires tours sports and historic site visits. Dr Louis H Evans addressed an estimated 35,000 Scouts in the amphitheater urging world brotherhood and unity among diverse youths.
Roald L Knotts assistant superintendent of Taylor County Schools attended a three day conference at Jackson's Mill sponsored by the State Department of Education. The event drew about 200 public school officials from across the state. A panel discussed services expected from the Department of Education with six county superintendents and an assistant. A second panel explained the 1957 certification law and related regulations. The West Virginia Association of School Superintendents planned its annual meeting with officers to be elected and discussions on school issues.
