The U S Fleet grew with three new vessels launched in separate yards. The submarine Tusk left Cramp Shipbuilding in Philadelphia, the light aircraft carrier Saipan launched at New York Shipbuilding Co in Camden New Jersey, and the 27 000 ton aircraft carrier Princeton slid from Philadelphia Navy Yard.
Manila July 11 Australians claim a shore to shore push in southeast Borneo has seized Balikpapan and the Pan ngqasari refinery area. Major oil fields remain in Japanese hands as battles continue along Manggar and Taritip while officers report slow progress near Manggar airfield and highway five. Chinese forces recapture Sincheng air base in Kiangsi and push toward Kanhsien and Nankang as pursuing Japanese retreat toward former American positions.
Guam July 11 The Tokyo radio and Fleet Adm Chester W Nimitz spoke of invasion plans as early returns from Tuesday 1000 plane carrier assault on Tokyo showed 184 enemy planes destroyed or damaged The Japanese air force was absent or reluctant and a carrier strike followed by landings on Iwo Jima was recalled Nimitz outlined growing US air power in the Ryukyus and MacArthur command of Army planes with Marine and Navy aircraft continuing a blockade of Japan Preparatory to further amphibious assaults The morning report noted two Japanese aircraft destroyed and no major fleet units in Nimita Bid A simultaneous Mustang strike from Iwo Jima targeted a Honshu port with little serial damage.
Los Angeles July 11 Barbara Grant heiress known as Bubs Hutton filed for divorce from Cary Grant citing mental cruelty that caused her great mental anguish. The couple wed July 8 1942 at Lake Arrowhead and separated February 15 no children or property settlement noted.
Washington July 11 The agriculture department warned of a possible further livestock feed shortage that could limit 1946 meat and poultry output. Unfavorable weather and labor/material shortages may reduce this year's feed grain production to the smallest since 1941, affecting next year's supply and potentially prompting proposals for higher financial incentives to boost livestock production.
President Truman sails aboard the cruiser Augusta toward Berlin for the Potsdam meeting with Churchill and Stalin, supported by a two cruiser task force. Reporters accompany the voyage as Truman relishes calm seas, regular briefings, and a sporty, sunlit mood mid voyage toward the historic summit.
Jean Eileen Creviston eight days old was returned unharmed to her parents after Mrs Phyllis Lanman admitted taking the infant from Marion City hospital nursery Sunday night. The suspect described the incident as yielding to impulse after visiting the nursery about 6:30 p.m. Sunday.
